I live in Brisbane and I have a huge problem with the fact that the government is allowing people to migrate to the city when there is not enough infastructure like roads and water suply to support the population already. Why whould we want more people here using what little water we have left and congesting the roads that are already jammed with traffic. |

I love it how people come here with pre conceived ideas & then compliment those who agree with them !
Ken talks sense ..
If we don't have increased migration this country will grind to a halt within maybe a generation. We are already feeling it because we have given a couple of generations inflated egos & this self belief that without a tertiary qualification they aren't worth anything...fact is many aren't worth a whole lot with one & we are now paying the price of going backwards in many areas due to a severe shortage of basic skilled labour.
We need migrants who are skilled in areas that our kids look down their noses at....
We need migrants who are prepared to work hard in order to do well ..
We need migrants who want to contribute to the growth of this country & not expect handouts from the taxpayers purse.
This great country of ours has been largely built on the post WW2 growth & hard work of migrants & if it means we need to positively encourage migrants to locate in regional areas rather than in the cities then let's get it happening & soon ! |

The dept of immigration have actually said they are considering reducing the amount of migrants they allow to enter the country. An announcement should be made soon.

I do not have problems with it but I do think that it should be distributed more around the place. There are plenty of decent country towns that could easily absorb some of the immigrants, I am not talking about places beyond the black stump, but some of the larger towns like Toowoomba, Townsville, Dubbo, Bathurst, Mackay etc.
As far as I can see immigrants all head for Sydney and Melbourne, to some extent Brisbane, maybe because those are the only places they have heard of.
Some kind of encouragement might be needed, I'm not saying anything as onerous as not permitting entry to Melbourne or Sydney for the first 2 years, but maybe tax breaks might work. |

It actually depends on what category migrants they would propose on increasing.I am a migrant too so I am not against migration as such. However,it is important to make sure that there is a balance of what countries they allow people to migrate from. |

Without an increase in immigration the population of australia would actually decline, meaning an aging population and a lack of economic growth.
In order for the population to grow couples would need to have at least 3 children, I think the prime minister said "One for each and one for the country"! |

I fully support increased immigration and believe that without it our country will stagnate but I'm very concerned that DIAC doesn't seem to be as up to date with the occupations they've listed on the SOL as they should be. I'm also unimpressed with the support services that are provided to new immigrants to find work and to settle.
Every day I hear of new immigrants who are having trouble finding work in the IT industry. That's my field so I tend to hear more about it, but there are other problem areas and yet we're still encouraging more and more immigrants with skills that don't really seem to be required.
I agree with other answerers that too many people are coming to Sydney and Melbourne and that provincial cities are not getting their fair share. Why not say "We'll make it easier for you to get a visa with permanent resident privileges (Medicare, education etc), but you must work (say) 3 years in a regional area before it becomes a fully permanent visa."?
I also get a lot of emails from people who have passed IELTS English tests with the required level for immigration and their English is very difficult to understand. Goodness knows what their spoken English is like! What hope do these people have of getting a decent job even in a field where there are real shortages? The English requirements need to be tightened substantially so that all immigrants have a chance of finding and keeping jobs. |
