Hi I went to perth just after christmas with my 5 yr old son for 4 weeks, we flew with emirates which is a really good airline they kept my son entertained with a goody bag and teddies and didnt mind him bugging them every 5 mins asking for a drink! They had plenty of videos and tv shows to watch. And as with most long haul flights you should really make the most of the complimentary drinks, as in my case I did and red wine is good for you which also helped with my legs and ankles swelling up both there and back again .Hope you enjoy you holiday!!! lucky you!

when I went to oz last yr (heathrow - melbourne, via singapore) I was too excited to sleep!
we flew with qanatas which is a good flying company, there are on flight entertainments available and enjoy the free drinks! we got given a goody bag well not really a goody bag but with snacks to keep us going through the night until the next meal.
I would suggest to take a book, comics, puzzle books etc. MP3 players are allowed but there is lots of music with the flight entertainment.
Enjoy the free things they give you, e.g. the pillow, warm socks and the eye cap things for sleeping which are very useful. Also i enjoyed watching the flight path, lol it was good seeing all the countries to go over, what height we were flying at, how cold it was outside, was very good!!! have a good time and goo luck with not getting too bored!

The time will pass fairly quickly. There are movies and games onscreen. You will want to try and sleep a little and you can read or listen to music, play cards etc. Move your feet lots as they tend to swell on long flights and drink lots of fluids on board and for a day beforehand. Avoid alcohol as 1 in the air is equal to 3 on the ground and its not a good idea on a long flight. Have a good time.

Maybe try and rest, books etc. if you fly with qantas the 747-400, which is the plane that does the long haul flights, there is heaps cool features and stuff like movies, music, games, and heaps more stuff to stop you getting too bored. Maybe also change your attitude coz if you say that its gonna be a boring 23 hour flight, it will be. Try and enjoy the flight like looking out the windows, chatting to the person who sits next to you and just try and boared the plane with a good attitude!! Enjoy your holiday mate :)

Im an Australian living in the US and I have done that 24 hour trip six times...five times with my daughter who is now about to turn three...(Atlanta,Ga to Cairns, Far North Queensland is a loooong azz flight!!!)

i have flown with JAL, QANTAS, Continental and Air New Zealand...i can honestly say that the best one by far is Air New Zealand....

they have on-demand media entertainment which means that basically you can watch what you want, when you want from the beginning, fast forward and rewind at your leisure. this makes a huge difference as far as time goes cause if you can watch a few movies, have something to eat and take a few naps...before you know it the fight is over...

if you have already booked your ticket then maybe you can get a portable dvd player with an extra battery and bring your dvd collection with you...

Air New Zealand are so nice, nothing is too much trouble...JAL is crap, I will never, never, never fly them again. QANTAS is all right, but not as good as Air New Zealand...

If you dont mind taking medication you can get a prescription from your doctor to help you relax which will make falling asleep much easier...im not a big fan of this, as i travel with my daughter, but my mum doesnt travel with out it...

have loads of fun in Oz...make sure that you get up to Cairns in Far North Queensland...

I usually take the flight that leaves LAX around 11PM, eat a full dinner, enjoy a glass of wine, then sleep for 6 to 8 hours. Then, when I get off the plane, I am ready for a full day. Us the eyemask Qantas provides, and put on the socks- warm feet and dark make it a lot easier to sleep. Also, get one of the neck pillows, they really help a lot.

I flew to Australia via a 2 hour transit stop in Bangkok in 2005.
We flew Qantas which were a great airline.
We flew out at 10pm on the Sunday night (UK time) and arrived in Sydney 6am (Oz time...which would be 10pm UK time)
I found that the flight went by very quickly. We were served dinner after 2 hours of boarding and then drinks. lights were then dimmed and folk could sleep if they wanted.
i was too excited to sleep so had great fun using the individual personal TV and watched several films. There was games that the kids could play on the screens.
i also enjoyed watching the flight path of the plane. Very exciting flying over all these countries.
I made sure i drank plenty of water on the flight and only had one alcoholic drink. I took some Vaseline for my lips as it does get dry in the cabin.
To help prevent DVT (deep vein thrombosis) I made sure i walked around the cabin every hour.
Take some books to read as well.

Also the two hour stop in Bangkok was most welcome as it gave us a chance to walk around and freshen up before continuing to Sydney. The flight times were about 12 hours to Bangkok from UK and then 9 hours from Bangkok to Sydney.
I enjoyed the flight very much and am doing it again in 2008.

happy flying/holidays

Hi I have been living in England for about 12yrs and regulaly, every 18-24months, return home (Perth W.A.). So I have made this very long trip quite often. My recommendation is that you DO NOT fly with the cheapest airine going and use one of the more respected airlines. My personal fave is Singapore Airlines. They have plenty to offer in the way of entertainment via the seat back screens. With plenty of movies (last time about 30-40 of them) many of which are new or nearly new releases and TV programs. Also radio stations and games (Nintendo). They also keep you well fed and with the complimentry alcohol you can have a few and sleep a great deal of the time if you wish. I also take some reading material (book and magazines) for when you just want to chill.
And If your lucky (not like me) and get sat next to someone nice you can always chat to the person next to you, if they are up for it.
Enjoy yourself and have a great time.

Im not sure anything cures the bordem. But if your a smoker Id seriously recommend some nicotine pages.

Nice big glass of Red wine topped up with a vodka... sleep most of the way then. :)

well firstly, the flight isnt 23 hrs. i went from LA to brisbane(aus) the only flight there is and it takes 13 hrs. quite an easy flight..a little tough in economy but qantas makes it just that little bit better. watch movies and try and get some seats at the bak which are sometimes free so u can sleep across the 3 seats and not be cramped.
