I think the most direct route is to take the Western Highway to Adelaide. Then its the Eyre Highway I think, via Port Augusta and Ceduna. Then about 2,000 km out of Adelaide, turn right at the T-juntion at Norseman, and head to Coolgardie. Then its all downhill on the Great Eastern Highway and into Perth.
If you have a little time, I would recomend following thecoast from Melbourne to Adelaide. That will be slower, but more interesting I think. |

The Drive is long and mostly hot Dry & monotonous.
Suggest putting the car if you own it on a Train & take the train over.
If its a Hire car drop it off & either train ( scenic route ) Or Fly & collect a hire car at the other end. |

You might find you enjoy going north-west from Melbourne through Mildura, then turning off after Renmark to Morgan, then Burra, Spalding, Crystal Brook and Port Augusta. Add this in to the detailed list above, which is from a computer program that for some reason does not acknowledge the roads that I travel on several times a year as I have outlined above. Check locally, you can't rely on directions unless you check. If you do it, it is a fantastic drive, but make sure your car is reliable and have petrol and water at all times. |

Don't - its probably cheaper & easier to fly. |

I'm a Pom and went from Perth - Darwin by car; Darwin - Pine Creek by oil tanker; Pine Creek - Alice by bus; Alice - Adelaide by road train; Adelaide - Melbourne by car; Melbourne - Sydney by train; Sydney - Brisbaine - oh blah blah blah, you get the drift. The others are right - FLY! |
