Adelaide is the most cost effective major mainland capital to move to, there are plenty of jobs too, esp. in the mining, construction and defence industries. You may also want to consider what type of work you are looking for and perhaps the type of climate you prefer, and whether you are looking to live in a large or a smaller city. Sydney and Melbourne have close to 4 million people (Sydney +4mil), and have all the pros and cons that come with living in large cities, Melbourne has the coolest climate of the mainland capitals, were Sydney has a warm mild climate, though rather humid in summer. The other mainland capitals, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide have smaller populations ranging from 1.7m to 1.1 mil people, Brisbane has a humid subtropical climate were Perth and Adelaide have a mediterranean climate, with hot dry summers and cool wet winters.
Australians tend to be rather parochial about where they live so it can be a little hard to gauge from people's feedback, as we often tend to think out city is the “best” and more often than not that’s why they live there. i'd love to say melbourne but truth is perth is the booming city in australia at the moment due to abundance of natural resources. rent is still cheap and becuse people have more money more spending, the job market there pays you more compare to the major cities like melb, syd, brisbane.
syd is the worse - high living costs n very competitive job market. |

I'd recommend Darwin. It featured regularly in the Australian Bureau of Statistics' "Cost Price Index" as having the lowest CPI of all the Australian capital cities. It is a good sub tropical climate so your heating requirements will be minimal but you will require air conditioning to offset that. It is close to Asia for shopping overseas or exotic holidays. It is on the coast and you will find that the people are great.

It depends on what type of city you would like to live in and also the type of work you are looking for. Thats the best way to decide. I would say Melbourne only because its not as big as sydney. MUCH Easy to navigate, cheaper to live and to be honest nicer. What field of work were you looking for? |

If your skills are for instance, plumber, electrician, i.t., in the building trade etc. you would probably get a job anywhere, as we have a big shortage here in Oz but it is very expensive to live in Sydney [I know - I lived there for 33 years and rent went from $30 to around $500 Aust dollars a week for a 1-2 bedroom flat in that time and I left 8 years ago - G.d knows what it is now.] Also a lot of ethnic gangs there now and the city and certain suburbs became not very nice places to be at night and on weekends. So I came to Tasmania. Beautiful place. Plenty of work for the abovementioned jobs here, friendly people, fabulous local seafood, fresh meat and fresh fruit and veges and gorgeous island to live on. Yes, it's a bit colder than the "big island" but very laid back. Depends how old you are and what you are looking for including nightlife etc. Not much of that down here, except in 2 major cities [Hobart and Launceston]. Melbourne is nice too with much the same weather but a lot hotter in summer. Adelaide I can't speak of, never been there, Perth is stifling hot in summer, Brisbane is pretty hot also but haven't been there either. Have been to the Gold Coast near Brisbane but hated it and haven't been to Darwin but it is definitely tropical.

Adelaide. It is a growing city, like everywhere house prices are going up but they are still some of the most affordable.
there are a lot of job esp. in mining. It's not to busy and has a very laid back atmosphere easy to settle into.
Perth is another good one, but the housing prices there are double the price of Adelaide!!! |

You don't say what type of climate your looking for and you don't say what field of work you are interested or qualified in, so until you do we really can't advise you correctly as to which city or town you should go to. |

Not Sydney!......just to get to work most areas,would
take you two hours each day. One way, then back another
two hours!!
the prices of cost affective housing is too far out
of the CBD [central business district}
Western Australia is where the boom is happening and
the Federal Government , helps itself to the kick backs
from the extra jobs and taxes coming out of W.A.
But if you wanted to settle its a much easier City in Perth
to settle....the furthest if 35 mts. to the city with Rail and
buses also servicing if you would rather not use the car.
Plenty of jobs in Perth itself and lots more up North of
Western Australia once you have been here long enough
to check it out for yourself. Also a very clean pretty City.
Oh and the weather.....we do have the best summer and best
winters.....while in Melbourne is always cold and Sydney not
much better... |

please don't come to melbourne or sydney,our infrastructure is being swamped by a outta control population boom.you should try brisbane,adelaide,perth or even one of the bigger regional centres. |

Melbourne is very nice.
It has good job opportunities and it is very easy to get to the city by train.
Houses are quite affordable compared to other cities.
Sydney is way too busy. |

i would also suggest one of the larger regional cities for job opportunities and cost of living. newcastle and wollongong are a short distance from sydney and geelong is a short distance from melbourne. the central coast region of new south wales is also highly recommended. |

Brisbane/Gold Coast is quite good - so I've heard. (I feel horrible saying that as I'm from Sydney)
3 of my friends have moved from sydney to gold coast, for the sun, the surf, the better jobs and the lower cost of living.
If you were NOT worried about the cost of living or a crappy public transport system then come to Sydney!!! |

Sydney is an extremely expensive city in which to live, But where you should settle depends on your skills, where you live now and what you are looking for. Australia is a large country and its climate varies a lot. If, for instance, you are from a hot country, moving to Tasmania would be a huge shock for you. You may find some other places culturally isolating. If you can provide a bit more info about yourself we can give you better advice. |

I say Perth - rentals/homes are still relitavely cheap and plenty of jobs are available from what I hear. Sydney is a no-go zone... WAY too busy and expensive to live anywhere near there. Melbourne is expensive but not as bad as Sydney. Brisbane is probably one of the worst places just at the moment - we have such an influx of people wanting to live in Brisbane that the house prices are going up and up and up - unfortunately (while there are plenty of jobs available) the wages aren't going up to match the house prices. Tasmania might be nice if you like the cold? I don't know a whole lot about there or adelaide or darwin though - so my vote would be for Perth. |

MELBOURNE MELBOURNE MELBOURNE!!!!!! im here on a working holiday visa and the place rocks!!! plenty of jobs and the cleanest city compared to sydny. easy layout also. if you are looking to get a job in construction then you are set. i work in a print joint and do nothing but plans for all sorts of new projects going on. plus if you just take a look around youll see there is plenty of work for construction. if you need any help or contacts to get set up (visa, backpackers hotels etc....oh and coolest night spots lol) send me an email. |
