I've travelled this route many times. Wow I'd go again and again Once you get North a bit the weather will be perfect , dry and very warm . Call into the pinnacles and if you like a snorkel then ningaloo reef is a must. You can snorkel just off the beach at coral bay . I found some places to be a long drive in and unless you are going to stay a couple of days not worth the drive Places such as shark bay a lot of driving if you only want a quick look .Some people will say fitzroy crossing is awful and I have driven straight through but once I stopped for a couple of days and so much enjoyed myself. They have a fabulous short boat trip up the river very interesting and a rodeo was on at the time so I had a look at that and that was very interesting as well Broome is a must and Kununurra certainly nice and interesting . I don't know if you are getting accommodation as you go or sometimes sleeping in the car Keep well back from the rivers up there crocs lurk. There are many rest areas and if you pull into them you will meet up with other travellers and get further info from them. The Boab trees are fascinating After you leave Katherine there are the mataranka springs . Your body will appreciate a relax in them with all that driving . There's the famous daly waters pub and Devils marbles. Many people camp around there and they are especially wonderful at dawn or dusk.Don't forget to carry spares food and plenty of water http://www.kununurratourism.com/&sa=X&oi=revisions_result&resnum=1&ct=result&cd=1&usg=AFQjCNHmwTr58yceIbfk5bY1O-dxMxR51g

I strongly urge you to go to tripadvisor website as there are hotels you can review as well as forums in which you can ask questions and get answers from experienced travellers and Aussies.

I visited Uluru and loved it. I did a 3 night stop over on route from Sydney to Cairns. It is a beautiful stunning and quite mystical place especially at sunset. Be sure to do the "sounds of silence dinner" as that is 5 star dining literally under the stars! we walked around Ayers Rock. Did not climb it as wanted to respect the Aboriginals requests not to climb it. We did a tour of the Olgas (valley of the winds walk)

Monkey Mia is famed for the numerous bottlenose dolphins that decide to visit and interact with the humans at the beach.
About 850km north of Perth lies Monkey Mia said My-ah, the world famous beach where friendly dolphins swim to shore to interact with eager humans. Located near the town of Denham on the Peron Peninsula, this protected area is housed within the extraordinary Shark Bay World Heritage Area. Monkey Mia, on Australias Coral Coast, is close to a vast number of unique attractions unparalleled anywhere else in the world.

Visit those websites posted above. The trip along our West coast is spectacular and best at the times you plan to travel nice mild weather and probably a bit warmer come September like into the 30's C (90-100F).

Darwin will be hot whatever time you visit and come the end of September it will practically be the "build-up" which is hot and humid and 33C with 100% humidity every day. Darwin is my favourite city in Australia...its so multicultural and different and relaxed compared to the rest of our country. You must visit the Mindl beach night markets there and Doctors gully where you feed the fish.

It would be great if you could get a travel partner for safety and company as it is along drive ...

Read those sites and chose for yourself what interets you...Monkey Mia, Broome, Ningaloo Reef, Pinnacles...the list is pretty long.

Coming from a born and bred Darwinian - it is pretty small, so the major places to visit would be Doctor's Gully, The Museum, the Town life ie. clubbing etc, Katherine Gorge, Litchfield, the Government house etc.

July, August and September are what we call the "dry" season. It's pretty cold for us. Temperature reaches about 17 degrees. That's cold for Darwin.

During this time of year it is really humid and hot - temperature is between 29 and 32. Boiling!

EDIT: ooooh and Mindil Beach Markets are always great. Don't forget the Saturday Parap markets too!

Uluru is the best marketed and biggest tourist rip off in Australia. The local aborigines who should be the richest in Australia are close to the poorest. Accommodation/food./petrol/sightseeing tours are more expensive here than any where else in Aus. Avoid it like the plague (most Australian avoid it as well) and choose somehwere else
