Going abroad to Australia and not planning to drink??

I am planning to go abroad to Australia, but I'm not a "party girl" nor do I drink a lot. I am wondering if people are not going to hang out with me or start judging me because of it. I know Australia is known for drinking and partying. I just want to enjoy the culture and the things that exist in Australia that does not where I live in the US. Is this a bad thing? Will I make any friends?
Additional Details
Yes, I am going to Cairns.

It depends on where you go. Smaller places (like Keppel Island, Cape Tribulation) have much less partying and more people interested in snorkelling, hiking, etc. In the big cities and islands there was a lot more partying.

It also varies between hostels. When I stayed in Cairns there was a huge hostel called Gilligan's which was really nice but had a big party atmosphere. I stayed in a smaller hostel that wasn't quite as nice but still had lots of people and was much quieter and laid back.

You'll meet other people like you. Some hostels organize tours that pick you up at the hostel... that's a good way to meet people who live in the same area. Also I found all-girls rooms to be a lot friendlier... in some places we'd all make friends and go on trips together.

I'm like you... I don't party a lot and I certianly didn't spend all that money to do what I could do back in the US. I met plenty of people who weren't there to party. I was really into the nature and animals so I tended to go to the types of destinations with less partying... maybe that's why I didn't have any problems.

Have fun! And go to Cape Tribulation and the Daintree Rainforest if you're in that area... those were my favorite.

Believe it or not, there are plenty of us out here who don't drink for various reasons ..... and we manage to have fun and make friends. Honestly, some people may be bothered by your not drinking, and they may get judgemental. Those people, I usually find quite irritating and shallow by the end of the evening anyway and steer clear. However, if you feel the need to hang around, or if you feel shy about not drinking, then go to the bar, get a ginger ale in a nice glass with a lemon or lime wedge and sip it. Nobody will know you're not drinking. Most people will be too busy concentrating (or not concentrating) on being drunk, they won't even notice (believe me, I used to be one of them). You'll have a great time, and if you just look around, you'll find that you're not the only sober one in the bunch --- and the drunk ones aren't usually that way all the time. You can hang out with whomever you want, and if they begin to get drunk and it bothers you or you bother them, then keep moving. You'll find others who would also prefer to see things without first having to look past the bottom of a glass.

I'm not really a drinker myself .. I've started to have the odd glass of red wine .. but apart from that , that's it.

When I was younger i drank to fit in socially .. usually ending up with a doozy of a hangover the next day .. so I made a decision to not drink .. I was very self conscious of it .. so I tried a little trick .. I would drink Orange juice ( as far as anybody knew There was Vodka in it ...BUT there wasn't really) or a cola .. nobody was to know i hadn't mixed it with something else..

BUT basically if you tell people these days you don't drink or feel the need to drink to have a great time .. people understand,:)

Hope you have a really lovely time while you are here.

One rule ( applies globally) though NEVER leave your drink unattended.

You'll be fine. You don't have to go to pubs and get pissed all the time due to some absurd social pressure.

Enjoy the natural beauty of the country, ask lots of questions, take lots of photos and make lots of new friends.

I did the exact same thing in America and I wasn't always in the pub whilst I was there

girl just enjoy urself. Australia love party girls lol we are not judge people like another countries do.Enjoy ur stay

But Why??
You must drink or you will go dry!!!!!! Australia is a very dry place, we cant afford for the peoples visiting to be dry too. It is important to drink 8 glasses of H2O every day to maintain body hydration. You will still make friends here though if you dont drink as much as Robert Decastella or Nemo, although please dont drink too much as we have water restrictions in some arid areas of this continent. Cheers, Im gonna go and have a drink or two now.

Don't believe the cliches. Australians are a mixture of teetotal and drunk and everything inbetween, just like most other nations. And we don't call people "cobber" any more either :-D

yes you will...
I'm an australian and I don't drink...
most pubs serve softdrinks, I think clubs serve them too...
honestly there are more than enough things sober tourists can do, they just might get bored by the 700th techno song and walk somewhere more interesting (like art galleries or under/across/over the sydney harbour bridge or whatever the hell tourists do... oh and for the record duddo is east... so it's not really out west they just like pretending it is so tourists don't find the hidden kool places for sober people ^_^ lol

Pub drinking in Australia has been dropping like a rock for 25 years. You'll get on just fine. Plenty of people here don't drink or just have one or two. Like most of the things Australia is "known for" this is well out of date.
