Australians are generally rather laid-back people, and there are no strict no-no's as in other cultures. A few tips:
When you go out as a group "your shout" means you have to buy everyone in the group a drink. Then other people will "shout you". If it is a large group, it will cost you more to buy the round, but you will also drink more if everyone takes a turn.
The usual "street-wise" caution must be used, as in most other cities, we have bag-snatchers, drink spikers, etc.
Driving: keep to the left, esp in Sydney and Melbourne. In Melbourne, get a local to explain to you how to turn right where the trams run.
In Perth: the worst drivers in the country. Get ready to be tail-gated, cut in front and insulted if you keep to the speed limit.
But relax and have fun, thats the most important rule! |

For most of the time, you'll fit in pretty well (if you live america now).
Motion means bowel movement...so don't say that in the wrong context! |

Generally - as long as you show some common sense, abide by the rules and law of the land and treat people the way you want to be treated, you should be fine. If you don't know anything - ask, people are more than willing to help you. Like anywhere in the world, there will always be people who will take advantage of you or try to rip you off, so keep your wits about you.
Apart from that - we are very laid back here. Come over and enjoy yourself. |
