Going to Australia for 6 weeks next Sept. Any suggestions on where/what to see/do?

Hi!
If your a sports fan,Melbourne is for you!There are also heaps of great Jazz,Blues, clubs in Melbourne.Brisbane and Perth are laid back,easy cities to get around in.Adelaide is a quiet city,Named 'The city of Churches'.Perth has the best weather,its the most isolated capital city in the world.Perth hasnt got much in the way of Attractions,but Fremantle,aka Americas Cup fame,has lovely cafes.
Western Australia's northwest has Monkey Mia,hand feed Dolphins,get in Early,like 7am to see them before the Tourists arrive at 730am on their buses!
Also,The Kimberley is about 3000km north of Perth,must fly up to Broome,and out the Gorges for a quick Flight or boat ride up the rivers,barramindi fishing,see a few Big crocadiles (man0eaters so avoid a swim)
Over to Queensland,Cooktown is beauiful,check out the Daintree rainforest,Cairns has had a cyclone recently,so wont look its best,Check out the Whitsundays,nice islands with many resorts to sip cocktails,etc. Great Barrier reef can be seen from many charter trips from Townsville.
Clubs are excellent in Townsville,many tourists,lots of natural beauty at Airley Beach,2000km south to Brisbane by plane,cheap flights on the net,Sydney has great nightlife as well as Melbourne,Got to see Kakadu while in Darwin though,plus the big rock,Ayres Rock,cant climb it any more though,its about 6 hours by bus from Alice SPrings,worth a look though.
6 weeks would require flights to all these places,bus would take to long.

There is so much to see & do, I`ll probably never see half of it living in Oz all my life.

You will have fun in any capital city, and you only have to go a couple of hours out of town to be out in the bush, national parks, etc. I have been to Ayers Rock and the Olgas, and even though its in the middle of the country, they are well worth the trip.

If you like the water, Ningaloo Reef in WA. about 1000km north of Perth is spectacular, and nowhere near as busy as Great Barrier.

I live in Perth, and it is a beautiful city, Fremantle is a suburb there now. Well worth a visit, the guy who said there are no attractions here is full of it!

I like the look of North Stradbroke and Magnetic Islands both off the Queensland coast. Going myself early next year.

Sydney is fabulous, I will be putting some of my photos on Yahoo later this week when they have been transferred from APS to CD. Darling Harbour is full of bars and restuarants, and the aquarium is there too, a great place to go. For the most spectacular view of Sydney, go to the top of the AMP Tower, you get a 360 of the whole city, and I took photo's from insed there, and they all came out great, no sign they were behind glass! The harbour area its self is great, lots of bars and restuarants, and the other side of the harbour is a place called The Rocks, lots of classy shops,bars and eating places, lots of Japanese and chinese places where you chose what you want, they give you a ticket and then call you when its cooked, great and very cheap! Top explore a bit further, there are trips to the Blue Mountains, breathtaking scenery and of course, the Three Sisters rock, and the worlds steepest incline railway. There is so much to do, so much to see of the new modern Sydney, as well as the old parts, such as John Cadmans cottage, one of the first settlers in Oz, wandering round Sydney, you will see old mixed with the new, just too much to put in an answer on here

It depends if you want to see Australia or actually experience Australia. If you want to see Australia go to all the big cities and coastal tourist spots and do the touristy thing, if you want to experience Australia, head to the outback, do what the locals do; go to a bush race meeting, gymkhana or rodeo. Visit outback icons like the Australian Stockman's Hall of Fame and Qantas Founders Outback Museum in Longreach, Queensland and learn some history about the real Australia.

Melbourne and Sydney are the biggest cities with loads of attractions, nite life etc with access to bushland an hour or so away from the city.
Perth is boring. As is Adelaide. Tasmania is wilderness: Clean fresh air lots of friendly people and great little town is Hobart the main city.
Queensland is hot but full of rednecks. Go up far north in a resort if you can, to meet people with brains. I don't know who recomended Townsville but they must be taking acid! Terrible dustbowl in the middle of nowhere populated by goons! I asked at the local pub if I could get a stronger coffee (they mainly drink coconu juice up there) and all the staff came out to see what was going on and were so insulted that I was no happy with the dishwater they served up! If you go there try it yourself. I think there is only one pub there but loads of rednecks!
Northern territory is full of drunks but great for outdoors activities.
In a nutshell stick to Melbourne or Sydney, far north QLD, Tasmania or Northern territory but only go to NT in a bus with a tour guide who packs a gun. That place is loaded with serial killers :(

I am a yank, who migrated to AU 8 years ago.

The cities here are brilliant.....clean, very multicultural, safe, always on the ocean, etc. Melbourne and Sydney are a must.

However, they are in a sense, another big 'melting pot' and are not the true-blue working collar class of Down Unda.

I also suggest travelling off the coast, inland a bit, and visiting some country towns. I can give you some great examples if you need them.

Cities are great, but of course, the 2 icons to see are the Great Barrier Reer, which can be reached out of Cairns, and the Outback, reached from a town called Alice Springs.

im 16 and i did everything there was to do over there i recommend sydney canberra and cairns...but you must see the great barrier reef

I've been to Sydney and Perth. I loved Hunter Valley which is about an hour and a half drive from Sydney. There are wineries there and the countryside is pretty. I went in September so the weather was good too. If you are into wine, go to Hunter Valley. There are loads of B&Bs to stay in and you can even join a group to go to all the wineries....thats fun. Everyone gets a little drunk at the end of the tour :)
