Has anyone been to New Zealand?

Me and my family are going in the August hols for 3 weeks and i'm not sure what clothes to take! Will it be really cold or shall we just take lots of jumpers?? We are travelling round both islands and stopping in different places (no accomodation booked yet). My husband wants to go and live there, how many points do you need to get into the country, whats the easiest way of starting the ball rolling??
Additional Details
We had no choice as i work in a school so could only get enough time to make it worth while in the summer hols otherwise we would have chosen the Summer months!!

i spent three years there. augest is pretty much the coldest time of the year. from jumpers in the north to a couple foot of snow in the alps on the south island. and just about everything in between.
as for immigration the best place to go is www.immigration.govt.nz is the website you have to apply to and they have the best information. be wary however, wages are lower in most professions than they are in europe and even though the cost of living is cheaper sometimes it can be hard to make a comfortable living there.
click on my profile, then my link to my 360 page and you can contact me directly there and i'll give you all the info i can.

It is quite cold in August as it is New Zealand's winter. Make sure you visit Milford Sound. It is a long journey from Queenstown but well worth it.

Yes I have! It is lovely there. It should be rarther cool but not too bad!

Have fun there, it is so good!

I have been there, when I went it was March so still summer. It'll be winter when you go so it will be colder on the South Island. It won't be so bad on the North Island but still not warm.

To look at moving there you need to visit the New Zealand Immigration website (www.immigration.govt.nz) and do a points calculation on there, that will tell you how many points you have got and how many you need to apply for residency.

Take lots of jumpers. It will be freezing in the south island and rainy in the north island!
You will probably get some lovely sunny days though, but it will still be chilly. Wooly hats and sunnies required!

I spent 5 months over there, but unfortunately for you, they are now coming into their Autumn. Youll need a couple of sweaters etc, as it wont be that warm, but the country is a real joy, you'll love it.

Enjoy!!

It is going to be sever winter in August. NZ weather changes drastically within a day. However, most of the NZers think that it is not a cold country so heating system inside buildings are normally poor even tough there are changes occurring these days. It is lovely place to visit and you have heaps of places to visit. So do a through study and plan well.
best wishes.

Hi there....I am assuming form the jumper comment you are from the uk. Its cold...like uk cold at times, but buildings are not as well heated here (and hence you feel colder at times)!

A nice warm jacket is useful (polarfleece etc should be ok)...but it probably doens't rain as much as in the uk winters (its more of a bitter, frosty cold here). Thick socks may also be helpful as I think the nights here are colder than the UK.

For info on immigrating/travelling try these websites.

no and have no intentions...........

Geez you would pick the coldest month to come here...Im a kiwi...and at the moment its heading out of summer and starting winter we have a lot of rain here during this period I would suggest Jackets jerseys even gloves...with good all round covered in shoes. The best month to visit is SUMMER by far!

I've been there 9 times - married a lovely girl from there.
The temperature range from the top of the North Island to the bottom of the South Island varies considerably. So take good quality casual winter clothing. Will you ski ?

It is a beautiful place and the people are amongst the finest you will ever meet. And they make great coffe!!

As to the immigration question - you have to check with New Zealand House in London as the priority lists can change according to skill shortages. Many 'English' people are going out again to try their luck.

Whatever happens I wish you well and have a great break
