Has anyone had some bad experiences whilst travelling around Australia?

I did, whilst travelling West Australia., I found an alarming amount of people in the service industry to be really rude, and hostile...my husband was even told to ''f'' off, and had a door slammed in his face, by the caretaker of a caravan park !! We also had to put up with sub-standard accommodation, which wasn't cheap !! All in all in just about every destination we went to...from Albany to Broome, we had really poor service, rude people and poor accommodation.....I wasn't impressed, and certainly won't return ever !!
Ps....even the airport officials were rude, and treated us like we were guilty of something, even when they had checked our belongings, and knew we weren't !!

To brutally honest SA....we in fact did absolutely nothing wrong, my husbands ''sin'' was to ask if there was accommadation available.

If as you say, you were treated rudely by West Aussies then I feel ashamed. I live in Albany and admittedly there are some arrogant people, but the most are different. Do not let this put you off coming back, but put in a complaint to the companies offices and get these people out of the industry. Again I apologise for my fellow sandgroppers.

okay, now lets hear why they told your husband to f*ck off? you're coming across as if you have done nothing wrong

Never had a problem and have travelled all over WA all in all I found people pleasant in fact I found they went out their way of their way to be helpful.

We had the opposite experience to that met some lovely people while caravaning through the West, actually left our van out the front of their house & moved into the house. We met them up North & they lived in Perth & invited us to call when we reached Perth.Have been in touch ever since & also visit each other.Sorry to hear about your bad luck.

oh wow, that's terrible!!
Come to Victoria next time and you might find that we're nicer haha :]
Trust me, not every Australian is like that!!
xx

Fact is that most accomodation in the more remote places is substandard, but does not pretend to be anything else. Another fact is that some of these places are full all the time with travellers and contractors since there is nothing else to be had, and there is no incentive to raise standards.

If you had seen some of the places I have, you might be surprised even more. Motel rooms without windows for instance at the (in) famous Barry Caves Roadhouse on the Barkly Highway. Long since demolished and no great loss, but it was the only thing available in 1980.

According to a relative who has recently done the round-Australia thing, caravan parks and such in some areas, particularly Western Australia will give a reserved room or caravan slot to anyone if the people reserving it are not there by 4pm. You might have found one such.

well from what your telling me you had to have been doing something wrong to cop so much rudeness. the chances are you and your husband may be stuck up yourselves and snobbish, and Aussies don't like that.

theres no way you couldnt have been doing something wrong.

I can understand where you are coming from, but I also know in a lot of the towns in WA they are extremely over worked. Many working 7 days a week to cater for the mine workers. This doesn't mean it's ok to be rude but sort of explains why were weren't friendly and why prices are so rediculously high. The accommodation in many of those towns is based for the miners, so they are dives but it's enough for them all they do is sleep there. I think you got a bit unlucky when it came to searching your bags, that is a random picking and they suspect guilty until proven innocent.

There are people like that all over the world, unfortunately you had to cop them. I can assure you we are not all like that.

Did you visit anywhere else in Australia? What were your feelings on those places and did you have any good experiences? I would hate to think you would never return to Australia at all because of this experience.

This is a completely different kind of bad, but at a hostel I was staying in there was a very large and poisonous spider in my room. Luckily the manager came along and squashed it.

Sorry to hear that, Daisy, but I can believe your story. I lived and worked between Aussie and NZ for nearly 5 years and yes, there is more of that going on in Aussie than in NZ. Although I cannot say that I have experienced anything like this myself, I have come across many people (especially Saffers), who have been mistreated in some way, by the locals. Fortunately, this does not happen throughout the country, and not all Australians are rude or uncultured. Don't lose heart, Australia is a lovely country.

omg! When I saw your question it was like it was calling me to answer! hehe. I am currently on holidays in Australia from nz. My dad had his phone and wallet stolen in Adeladie the other night. Then we flew into Sydney and our plane was delayed because some guy was murdered in the domestic terminal. I found the people in Adeladie very friendly but not in Sydney. No one says hello to you there and don't try and help you. I'm now on the Gold Coast and it's beautiful. However, the same arrogance exists here. I am originally from Australia but I'm now seriously considering calling nz home for good. Another thing about some Australians is that they can't take people knocking their country. I've seen people here driving around with pics of Australia on their car with a slogan saying "if you don't love it, f** off". I mean, isn't that a little bit narrow minded???? However that being said, I have met some very friendly people here. It's not all bad but I can't wait to get back to my new home nz

Australians can't take criticism, even if it's constructive.

Australians tend to have a preference to discriminate against their indigenous inhabitants.

I saw this happen, and I was forever appalled.

e.g.) My Anecdote

-Start-

While traveling around Australia in 2006. We (family) went into a restaurant in suburban Melbourne for lunch. The waitress greeted us and subsequently directed us to a vacant table and brought us several menus. We ordered and we waited for our food.

A couple of minutes later, an Aboriginal family walked in to the restaurant. They were immediately instructed to leave the restaurant by the waitress, who then locked the doors and placed the 'Closed' sign.

-End-

Disgraceful......
