I travelled round Oz (and various other places) at the same age as you'll be and it was the best time ever. I was in Oz for 8 months and away from home for 2 years. In Australia I was with a friend for half the time and on my own for the rest of the time so have experienced travel there from both sides, and preferred being on my own. Why?

If you are on your own you are more likely to make the effort to talk to others, and people are more likely to talk to you. You'll meet people in hostels, flat-shares, at work (if that is what you are planning to do). So much of what you will do whilst you are there will involve a few days on an organised trip with others like you thrown together, that you cannot help but making friends. And conversely, if you don't get on with some people, then you'll only be with them for a few days.

The other positive though about being on your own is that you can be completely selfish - don't fancy seeing/ doing anything one day, then don't. It is 'your time'. There are no obligations.

Australia is geared up for independent travellers, it is easy to get around and you won't feel alone - unless of course, you want to be at certain points, as everyone needs from time to time.

Yep, it is daunting when you leave your family and friends, but you will not be alone for long. I promise!!

Have a great time.

Say hi to Dorthy and pat Toto for me.

Have fun and enjoy yourself.

You should be OK. Australia and New Zealand are geared towards backpackers and so could not be any easier to travel around. I did it 10 years ago and it is a brilliant experience.

Yes, I did it many times. I'm far over 40. No problem at all and I'm female.

Katy H has nailed this one. You'll meet so many new people, all doing exactly the same things as you both in hostels and bars. Start on the tour if you're not confident enough to go it alone from the beginning, but you'll soon realise how easy it is to travel around and make friends.

Have fun

Don't go on a tour, go alone. That way you'll meet lots of other people, maybe even some Australians.
