up until this point in my life , i had no intentions of ever going to america.i'll wait and see what your new preident does. if he is a war monger or doesn't look after your poor and homeless i guess i won't be there for another x amount of years. we have high hopes for your new president.

I have been to USA, and it was a great place for a visit but i wouldn't live there. Australians are much nicer, sorry. Its also much cleaner and food is alot nicer in Australia, i struggled in USA to find a healthy meal.

I've been to America many times and have spent quite a bit of time there. I like it though still prefer to live in Australia. I feel much safer here and the people are definitely friendlier but America also has a lot to offer.

The US has some really beautiful and fascinating places. I loved the Rockies; found the Grand Canyon unforgettable; loved New England in the autumn (fall); Washington DC was great (though I got off the beaten track there and was terrified); I liked Boston (but had another scary experience there); loved New York and Central Park; liked San Francisco but hated Los Angeles and Chicago; loved Atlanta and the rest of Georgia but hated the poverty I saw there. Sorry, but I wasn't keen on Florida - I much prefer Queensland where I live. The nicest people I found were out in the mid-west but there were also a lot of bible bashers out there who were difficult to avoid. People in the cities were very often rude and unhelpful - it's not like that here.

Australia is a completely different place and there really are very few similarities between the two countries although we share a similar culture in TV, movies, computer games etc. We're several years behind the US in many things but everything (unfortunately even the bad stuff) eventually makes its way here though usually on a smaller scale. Our roads and infrastructure aren't as good as in America but then that's understandable when you consider that our countries are similar sizes but you have over 14 times our population to pay for them. Shopping is better in the US and we don't have anything like WalMart. Decent living standards and a good quality of life are far more universal here, particularly in our cities and we don't have ghettos and the grinding poverty I saw in so many places in the US.
And I agree with bella_rings - the food in Oz is better. Much fresher and far less processed.

Hi ,I live in melbourne Aus and some of the differences i noticed whilst in the states are(some are quirky)
Money:yours all same color -our different
guns: most aussies have never seen a handgun and we do not have the right to own one unless in a spoting shooting club
alchohol: 18 years legal age in aus
Voting:it is compulsory in aus(fine for failing to ,so we dont have candidates trying to buy our vote
sport:all yours is pro and college- ours is based on club sysstem and not college
food: we have more variety and fresher ingredients-yours is so BIG and so SWEET
Service: your waiting staff rely on tips and most places we consider over staffed.here the wages are highewr with fewer service stff,so most americans complain on our service standards
Most aussies do not brew coffee at home they drink instant
Aussies do NOT bbq shrimp....they love red meat
language:
mobile phone= cell
footpath= sidewalk
service station = gas station
boot = trunk
barrack = root

I have been to California a couple of times and think it is great for a holiday. I would not like to live there permanently as it is too fast a pace compared to Aus. The people are very friendly and not much different to us, but are a bit more uptight and not so laid back. I would go again and intend to, but never live there.

i live in philly and would kill to go to australia I hear many good things !

Hard to make a comparison, I live in Sydney now, but grew up on the coast about 100km South of Sydney. I've been to the states twice, once on a trip through California, out to the Grand Canyon, Vegas etc. The second time I visited my Dad in Texas.

So - opposed to Sydney - your cities - Houston, LA etc are massive - LA seemed to have fairly similar weather to Sydney.

Texas was different to anything I'd really experienced here, but in saying that I've never really been to our outback etc. It's really hard to make a comparison, becuase they are both so huge and vary from place to place.
I did find the meals in the states absolutely huge though.

I live in America, I would trade places with you any day if you live in Australia. I am actually going there next November to Perth, West Australia.

Orion
This question is far to vague to genuinely gauge any differences or similarities between the two. The U.S. is far to big in both physical size and population. Any statement made could only be a generality based on a very narrow perspective. You might come away better comparing say Sidney to New York City or Queensland and the state of Texas. Or San Francisco and Perth... both beautiful cities and generally nice people
