The currency is the Australian dollar. Traveller's cheques are accepted at banks or large hotels. Credit cards are accepted, but use may be restricted in small towns and outback areas. Automated banking machines are available in main cities.

Check with your bank for information on Automated Banking Machine (ABM) services in other countries. You can also check the VISA ATM locator page or the MasterCard ATM locator page for the addresses of ABMs around the world. Your bank can advise if you need a new personal identification number (PIN) for overseas access to your account. Credit cards and debit cards should be used with caution due to the potential for fraud and other criminal activity. ABMs should be used during business hours inside a bank, supermarket, or large commercial building. Leave copies of your card numbers with a family member in case of emergency.

just come back from 4 weeks backpacking, and most places ONLY take credit cards!!!

Everywhere in Australia takes credit cards. The only places that don't are really small restaurants and shops that don't have EFTPOS facilities. Don't worry.

take a visa and a mastercard to cover all angles and you should be ok.ive heard mastercard can be iffy in oz due to the time difference.pay in oz through the day ,its the middle of the night in uk so not many proccessing staff working.

Most places accept mastercard, it's the best way to pay for things on overseas trips. Very small shops won't

Delulah
Are you serious? Do you really believe we are that backward in Australia that we don't use credit cards?

You must be incredibly stupid

*Jasmin*
you can use credit cards but i wouldnt if i were you as there will be alot of charges put onto your card for using it in a different country

We take credit cards almost all over the country. Actually our facilities are much better here than in the US. We have eftpos facilities in most places.

what is a post office card??

Unfortunately some of the replies seem to have come from people too young to actually hold a card.

You will find Mastercard and Visa are readily accepted at numerous outlets. Diners and Amex are not so popular due to the extortionate commission they charge to vendors, but they are still good at places like jewelers and hotels. Do not use travelers cheques, they will not be accepted at many places outside of city centres and even the banks don't seem keen on them, especially if they are in a foreign currency.

Try to avoid getting cash advances on credit cards due to the charges, but straight purchases will often be at a better exchange rate than you can get for cash.

If you go into country areas always have some cash, if only because the card machines rely on telephone lines and such.......so they can fail. However, even remote roadhouses will take the cards.

Finally, as long as it has the Mastercard or Visa logo then it doesn't matter who has actually issued it.
