It depends on the severity of the crime. Vandals very rarely get caught, Robberies are on the increase as is burglaries but they are still not common. The standard drugs are illegal, like marijuana and Ice and ecstasy, and the penalties are minor like $50 bucks for having a bong, around $200 bucks for recreational drugs if the quantity is not large enough to be called supply, Most offenders get probation or community service for minor crimes.
Under age offenders usually get a Youth Justice meeting and they have to face the victims of their crimes face to face. This is a new system that is having good results in deterring young offenders.
Different states have different penalties so it varies a bit. In some states it is not illegal to grow pot as long as you stick to the limits and do not sell it. Some states hand out infraction notices, like a driving fine and you do not have to go to court for minor drug offences, just got to hand over what you have on you.

Penalties depend on the severity of the crime. For minor crimes, dealt with at the lowest level of the court system the maximum penalty is 2 years. Depending on a person's previous record and the circumstances of the offence a penalty will range from a bond to be of good behaviour, a fine or imprisonment.

The maximum penalty for possessing a traffickable or commercial quantity of drugs is life in prison.

And for those who think the system is too lenient, consider these 2 facts. Over 80% of offenders who receive a "slap on the wrist" in children's court never re-offend. That means that those "slaps on the wrist" are pretty effective at nipping crime in the bud without doing irreparable harm to the future of the offender.

The second thing is that you receive a very distorted view of sentencing from the media. You only here about sentences that the media can sensationalise, and the reports you get of the circumstances of the offender and the crime are incomplete at best, and grossly distorted at worst. There have been several studies done where ordinary folk are presented with the same information that judges are given. The universal outcome is that the ordinary folk give more lenient sentences than the judges.

It's all up to the judge on the day....

My man got shot a few years back, (attempted murder) the bloke got 10 years, out in 2, so go figure!

The justice system here is a joke.
A Life sentence should mean "life" for a start.

Live_For_Today
The justice system in Australia is a JOKE, as many offenders get off with a slap on the wrist and community service for 6 months to a year. They may as well say "You Bad little boy, now here's your slap on the wrist and don't do it again now", and what do they do!!!!! re offend. We have got Teenagers bashing and nearly killing another teenager and they too get of lightly, meanwhile the victim is in hospital unconscious and is in for a long recovery. ITS A JOKE THE JUSTICE SYSTEM HERE.

The penalties vary, depending on what mood the judge is in !!!

Penalties are not severe enough to discourage many crimes. But many areas have little crime, compared to some other areas.
