Hey Aussies, should we take the Union Jack off our flag?

YES - get their flag off our flag.

Two points of clarification:

1. We did NOT fight under that flag. It has only been our official flag since 1953. Long after the World Wars.

2. It does NOT represent our heritage. Ask any Aborigine or anyone who does not have an English background.

Have some pride Australia and let's have our own flag.

I think we should keep the Union Jack for as long as we remain a Commonwealth country...

BUT I am NOT a monarchist and definitely think we should change it if we become a Republic...

and I DO think we should become a republic.

Im a kiwi, but I love my aussie brothers and sisters, someones gotta show us how to play cricket! or rugby, or football, or league, or motor racing, or...

Yes, the Jack is no longer required. I think a 21st century remake with the stars and some other, perhaps indiginous, pattern, would be fitting. After all, Australia & New Zealand are now the mice that roared, and the world has noticed us. We are collectively 5% of the population of the US, there are cities with more people than our entire countries! Might as well have a flag of our own. I do like the similarities of the NZ/ Aus flag, confuses the hell outa the rest of the planet! Go the southern cross, oi oi oi!

diddlibop
I believe that it is about time we became a republic, however it will never happen until Australia teaches the public about why we should have the change, otherwise if people are not going to agree to something they are not familiar with. People are to scared of change

Absolutely, it's an anachronism, a remnant of a forgotten and forgettable era of colonial rule. Australia is it's own country and should have it's own flag and future.

no it is part of our history, I am over peopel wanting to change this and that about australia, our flag included.

our history and culture was all formed under the banner of that flag. Why throw away a part of our history, our young men have died in 4 wars under the falg, it would be plain disrespectful to change it in any way shape or form.

NO not at all,our forefathers fought and died under this flag, our nation grew up under this flag our sporting achievements were under this flag, forget England they mean nothing to Australia anymore, other than close allies and the union jack on our flag is as much apart of us as it is England lets keep a flag we can be proud of.

Kaz
I don't believe there is a need or reason to take off the Union Jack or change any part of our national flag, unless we become republic.

trykindness
Why what is the problem with it? I dont live there now but I am wondering what is the problem with it. Progress can happen in Australia wether the flag is green or yellow or black.
