Depends on what you like doing - if you're speaking about Perth, Australia. They have a pretty decent pub culture and weekend nightlife. It is as dead as anything during the week though, unless you like hitting the clubs where all the uni students hang out.

Theatres are OK, and there's a stand up comedy lounge as well. There are some half decent local bands that play in the pubs over the weekends, so if you like live music then there's always that option.

The beach culture is very strong, and all the beaches are all very clean. You're arriving at the right time of year to begin making the most of them because it's Summer soon.

Being a city of 1.5 million - or thereabouts - it has all the usual things like drag racing (legal and illegal), speedway, every sport you can play, family events, singles scene, art galleries, museums, movie theatres etc.

There is also the Swan River. They do a lot of boat cruises up and down the river. If you like water-skiing then you've come at the right time of year for that too. They're having the Red Bull air race over the Swan River in a few weeks too.

They have a theme park called Adventure World. It has some pretty good rides, looping roller coasters, go-karts, and seriously fast water slides. There's a few go-karting places in Perth, both indoor and outdoor, and some super fast karts too. They have indoor and outdoor shooting ranges if you like to play with guns. After a bit of training you can freely play with pistols and shoot holes in things.

Dancing lessons are pretty much the rage in the nightclub district of Northbridge at the moment. Just about any type of dancing lesson is available. (There are a few nightclub districts around the city centre, not just Northbridge.)

And if you're into gambling, then there's always the Burswood Casino. They have decent acts visit every now and then from interstate and overseas.

Be prepared to find things quiet during the week. The shops close at 6pm, except Thursday nights. If you like riding motorbikes, then Perth is a good place for it. There are heaps of days of sunshine during the year, and lots of motorcycle clubs. Basically, the weather is pretty good for most of the year so an outside lifestyle is pretty high on most people's agendas.

Service in Perth is pretty crap though. There's a lot of people with their minds on the weekend and hitting the beach, thinking about liesure etc. so don't always expect the top of the range customer care. That's not to say it's like that everywhere, but you will come across it.

The way to have a good time is probably to make friends and hang out with them. Knowing local people will always help you keep interested. Hope you enjoy your move, and if you don't, no one will hold it against you.

I visited Perth 3 years ago. Saw quite a bit. Fremantle Market is great, and you MUST go to Cicerellos for the best fish and chips in the world. (Also in Fremantle)
However, the very best thing was taking a flight out to see the rest of oz. Perth is too full of whinging poms for my liking.

Perth is the capital of the Australian state of Western Australia. A population of 1,477,800 [1] (June 2005) makes Perth the largest city in Western Australia and home to three-quarters of the state's residents. The city is also the fourth most populous urban area in Australia.

The metropolitan area is located in the south west of the continent between the Indian Ocean and a low coastal escarpment known as the Darling Range. The central business district and suburbs of Perth are situated on the Swan River.

Some attractions in Perth include:

* Kings Park is a large beautiful park full of native flora located in the middle of the city. The best views of Perth can be found here. Visit the modest but beautiful war memorial.

* Margaret River is the home to some of the world's best wines. Good food and pristine beaches make the southwest region a favourite destination for tourists and locals alike.

* Fremantle, about 20km south-west of Perth is an old port city. Small enough to walk around comfortably with attractions that include the Maritime Museum. Popular with the locals as a place to go for a coffee and even more laid back than Perth. Renting a moped is a great way to see all of what Fremantle has to offer.

* Hillarys Boat Harbour in Perth's northern suburbs is about thirty minutes from the centre of the city. Great food, drinks and beaches. A small water park, The Great Escape, will keep the kids entertained. The Aquarium of Western Australia (Aqwa) is located here as well. Aqwa features an underwater glass tunnel where you can get close up to sharks, stingrays and a huge variety of other marine species.

* Perth Mint is the nation's oldest operating mint and one of the oldest mints in the world still producing coins from its original premises. You can buy and sell gold, purchase jewellry and souvenirs, see the mint in operation, and watch molten gold being poured to create gold bars.

* Perth Zoo has been open since 1898 and has an excellent reputation with both tourists and locals. The cost of entry can be found on the website, and free guided walking tours are offered at 11am and 1.30pm each day. Catch the ferry from Barrack Street jetty to Mends Street (South Perth) and walk to the zoo from there. There are lots of cafes in Mends Street. The ferry is operated by Transperth, and tickets are transferable between the ferry, buses and trains.

* Rottnest Island, a popular holiday destination featuring a casual atmosphere, picturesque scenery and some of the world's finest beaches and bays, is located just 19 kilometres off the coast

Best Regards
