PAY NO ATTENTION TO J. K - the answerer above me. What a loser.

OK You are very spoilt for choice in New Zealand - I lived there myself for many many years so have been all around NZ.

Since I lived in the south island (which is better anyhow) I’ll give you some ideas’.

Marlborough / Picton – The Sounds - http://www.destinationmarlborough.com/ You can take the ferry from Wellington into Picton – top of the south island.

Nelson, the sunniest place in NZ! – http://www.nelsonnz.com Abel Tasman National Park, http://www.doc.govt.nz/templates/PlaceProfile.aspx?id=38455 Golden sand beaches, Awaroa Lodge, http://www.awaroalodge.co.nz swim with the seals, http://www.sealswim.com You can hike down one way and take an aqua taxi back or even kayak.

Whale watching is in Kaikoura. http://www.kaikoura.co.nz
http://www.whalewatch.co.nz

Christchurch, the garden city - http://www.christchurchnz.net/visitchch
The Gondola is great - http://www.gondola.co.nz
Christchurch's International Antarctic Centre - http://www.iceberg.co.nz

Franz Joseph Glacier - http://www.franzjosefglacier.com

Wanaka – Lake Wanaka - http://www.lakewanaka.co.nz/index.cfm/Home

Queenstown http://www.queenstown-nz.co.nz is the adventure capital of NZ – especially for EXTREME adventure – must do’s Bungy jumping, AJ Hackett - http://www.ajhackett.co.nz
The world famous Shotover Jet doing full 360Âş spins! http://shotoverjet.co.nz
And The Milford Sounds, http://www.fiordland.org.nz
If you are into skiing – go to http://www.snow.co.nz/areas/area_index.asp to check out all the ski fields in NZ if going wintertime.

Have fun!

If you don't know buy or loan a Lonely Planet from the library. Then you cover it all. However the information centres are excellent. They will tell you all the places to see, arrange accomodation. Start with the one at Auckland Airport. Go to New Zealand AA (Automobile Association) website where NZer's have voted on the top 100 spots to visit in NZ. That may help.
To avoid? Can't think of many problems travelling. Just depends on how long you have travelling - so much to cram in otherwise - I think the only problem is trying to fit it all in!

You didn't say what island ur going to. I just came back from Queenstown & it was beautiful, you must go up the Gondola, great view with restaurant, Milford Sound is nice but it's a 12 hour day if your going on a bus tour. If you like extreme sports go Bunji jumping & the jetboat. Arrowtown is an old town, very cute.

Avoid Westport on the north west tip of the South Island- worst city in the universe. Apart from that, go anywhere. You will always stumble upon something worth seeing. NZ has more drop dead gorgeousness per square inch than anywhere else I have been.

Ignore rusty, he's obviously a big girl's blouse.
Southward's car museum just north of Paraparaumu; Hunua Falls; Fly by Wire; bungy jumping all over the place; thermal activity at Wairaki and Rotorua; Nelson Lakes; trout fishing lake Taupo; Whirinaki forest park; Waipoua forest - especially see Tane Mahuta and Mahuta ngahere (they're two big kauri trees); the volcanic cones of Auckland like Mt Eden and One Tree Hill; Malborough Sounds; Milford Sounds; Kelly Tarlton's aquarium; Viaduct Basin in Auckland; The pinnacles; Whale watching off Kaikoura coast (in a boat); tons of stuff to see and do.

mareeclara
well it really depends on what you want to see....
There are the main centres, Auckland, Wellington, Chrsitchurch....to maybe see if you like people
Or there is scenery a plenty...the South Island is considered much more beautiful than the North Island, although there are things to see there.

You can do the touristy things like see the hot pools in Rotorua, see Queenstown (adventure capital, but stunning beauty) ...but the range of stuff is pretty varied .
Beaches and coastline.....plenty and varied...I would suggest Abel Tasman area (and some beaches in the far north are worth a look to) for beaches, but coastlines...hmmm too many to say..Marlborough Sounds, Doubtful and Milford Sounds maybe up there.

Forests a plenty, I love the West Coast of the South Island, but there is a lot around and quite varied.
volcanoes--well Mt Tongariro would be a winner there and you can go to White Island too.
LOTS more...I'll put a link to some website for you to peruse at your pleasure

New Zea land is great but do avoid the the thiefs and prostitutes

Hi i would just like to comment on something a poster above me has said about going to franz josef glasier.... dont go there!

I went there on my holiday and it was horrible. U will get rained on all the way there, then climb up an ice wall and be freezing. they wil make u squeeze through small holes which may collapse at any time, and the whole thing is basically a horrible experience.

Oh, and the woolly socks they give you to wear are already wet from the last person.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

kayjay
Auckland isn't much of a tourist destination, just a location for the International Airport. Don't waste too much time there.

mariemlm
drive carefully
stay away from the large cities such as auckland or christchurch
take your hiking boots, fly repellent & waterproofs with you
