Your first step is to look at Immigration for Australia website - http://www.immi.gov.au Research your options if you can come here. If you have a skilled job on Australia’s 'short' list then you will have a better chance For Aussie skilled jobs go to http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/index.htm You can always come as an International student if you are under a certain age...
About working in Aussie - http://www.workingin-australia.com
Step-by-step guides to procedures and paperwork
http://www.justlanded.com/english/australia is a great guide that explains things in plain English, applying for visas, working or as an international student etc…

Not sure what state you are thinking of but they each have their own website and skills shortage list. The sites will give you an idea on each state anyhow.
Western Australia - http://www.migration.wa.gov.au
Queensland - http://www.sd.qld.gov.au/dsdweb/v3/guis/templates/content/gui_cue_menu.cfm?id=867
New South Wales – http://www.business.nsw.gov.au/migration
Northern Territory - http://www.migration.nt.gov.au
Victoria - http://www.liveinvictoria.vic.gov.au
ACT - http://www.business.act.gov.au/index

Good Luck with it all.

Yes visit here first before deciding to move here. Why? because people have come here thinking that it is going to be like it is on TV eg; Home and Away/Neighbours and get a rude shock when they find out that it is NOT what they expected.

australia isnt looking for more immigrants right now so unless you have a family sponsor or are a skilled worker needed there it will not be as easy as you may think
check out the aussie immigration website

It's easy to see why K Bear gets so many best answers!
Just ignore the idiotic replies above.

This question is asked at least once a week on this site, and much good advice has already been given, apart from K Bear's. I suggest you do a search of questions and read through previous answers.

Here is a recent example: http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AmWI3lsOvhyQccHkrg3kckWALxV.;_ylv=3?qid=20071022030232AAlp9UT

Good luck ! ~ Australia is a big, varied country with a generous spirit. What you find will depend to a large degree on what attitude you bring to it.

I was chatting to an Aussie about the same thing the other day. He recommended staying away from Sydney and heading towards Brisbane or Perth. Perth has a mix of Aussie and ex pats to help with the feeling of being homesick. Have a look on the ex pat forums on the internet. I think the visa applications have just changed, which may speed up the process. With regards to other advice, what are you trying to find out?

It's a good idea, esp if you live in the UK now! I'd say go for it :-) That's the best advice I can give you.

From which country are you? all I can tell you is go to your immigration in the country where you are & find out.I know everyone in the other world would like to come in but here is very strict now because of illegal immigrants whose background checks are quite not genuine, wheter they have a criminal or undesirable background no one can tell. They have to learn english first & australian cultures which they will be given a citizenship test later on .

If you are thinking about it - DO IT! You will always regret the things that you don't do in life. I have been living here for 7 months now and I wouldn't change my decision if I could go back and do it again. What can you lose? A bit of time and money going through the application process... You can always go back IF you feel it isn't for you. How will you know if you don't try it? (It is great down under - just don't tell everyone!!!!)

Bring your own drinking water as we are trying to recover from a drought at present.
P.S. If Australia was that bad, we wouldn't be here either.

dont expect much 'high culture'. You wont find yourself in many conversations about politics or history, learn about surfing and be ready for many conversations about how much australia is better than england. I met a lot of australians travelling Europe and i know london is rife with them, but once you've met one, youve kind of met them all.
