Backpacking is the way to go if you are young enough. Hitch hiking is against the law and, of course, can be dangerous. Hook up with some folks at the backpackers. You will have more fun in groups. Hotel meals are good and generally the cheapest. Keep in touch with your family regularly to let them know where you are and what you are doing. "Travelling" in Australia can mean a lotta miles, so buses are a good place to start. Get out of the cities into the regional areas. Queensland is great Mate! If you plan to work at all, you must have a working visa before you enter the country. What about a Working Holiday visa? Have fun. You'll love it.

Australia
Hi there, (male or female)
I (female) would honestly reccomend flying straight to Bondi Beach, Sydney Australia.
Stay at Noahs Backpackers. it is right on the beach, they arrange casual work if your strap for cash, they have great BBQ nights, have a bar, they do tours (to Home and away, if you watch that), great shopping, you can then hook up with new friends and go from there.
it was a great place for me to start when i traveled on my own, I actually ended up staying there for 4 months, it was so much fun.

yeah backpacker places and people there are really in the know howjust even go to the pub and talk to some locals they'll give ya soem inside info on places to go and all that also footy matches are great too

I would suggest a tour company, they advertise on the net or go to your local travel agency. Organised tours are great and are varied as well heaps to choose from and depending on which you would like to choose you might also meet people your own age or with similar interests. Please be careful of accepting offers from people on the net!

join the yha & stay at yha's and travel on the buses from one yha to the next.
you'll meet lots of people and have a wonderful trip.

get on yahoo and search for something like backpacking around australia, there are plenty of sites and people to help you out with planning and what you will need to take, we have youth hostels all over aus and rooms in pubs where you can stay for pretty cheap, meeting people is easy just go to a pub on friday, saturday nights and sunday afternoons, and if your looking to work as you travel the harvest trail is awsome i did it for over a year and you meet people from all over the world and get paid as you travel, you can pretty much go anywhere in aus and get work

First - learn to talk properly - if you talk the way you write (your question) we will think you are a typical yobbo and as much as people here will be VERY hospitable and help you in every way they can, they will laugh at you behind your back. (This is NOT a sarcastic remark - we take good education and good manners seriously)

Second - get on the net or a travel agent and get your travel organised - as already explained by other answers here.

Third - "how to go bout it how 2 meet peop" {sic}? VERY SIMPLE - "hello, I am from ........ How are you?" is a good start.
