If you have not been to Australia, go to Sydney first. Sydney has attractions like opera house, harbour bridge, blue mountain (three sister), darling harbour, Sydney Harbour Cruise, Star City Casino and many more, which many people have heard or seen on TV.
Melbourne has attractions like Great Ocean Road, Phillip Island penguin parade, Sovereign Hill, Crown Casino, Lygon St (many Italian restaurants) and many more.
If you have time for both it will be good. Sydney and Melbourne is just an hour flight. Check out domestic flight fare at www.qantas.com.au or www.virginblue.com.au. Both areas have their unique styles. Melbourne is sometimes called "Milan in the south".
Happy holiday! |

Sydney is more business like. Melbourne is interesting. Melbourne is more for the younger crowd. Try visiting borders bookstore when you have the time. There are lots of travel books/guide there that can help. |

Melbourne - Less "commercialised" than Sydney, with a rich culture, unique architechture and good food. |

Melbourne is fun! People are relaxed and there is sooo much to do. If you have seen the Opera House, The Harbour and the Harbour Bridge you have already seen Sydney. The rest is a dusty smelly city and 4 Million crooks! |

Sydney. But take good walking shoes! If you stay in the Kings Cross area, you are central to everything, can walk to the harbour, the opera house, all the ferry boat terminals, walk to the park, and uptown, or hop the subway train to the shopping malls on the outskirts of town. Lots to see and do there! |

Having been to both I'd suggest Sydney. its more cosmopolitan and the places of interests are not far off the city centre. Very lively place and much bigger compared to Melbourne. You'd definitely enjoy it. Have fun. |
