How Much Would This Cost? |
I'm moving overseas and I would like to know if it's cheaper to ship my furniture over there or sell it here and buy everything new over there. If I did decide to ship it, how much would it cost? Additional Details I'm moving to Australia from California. |

It would depend on how much you choose to ship, I moved a 3 bed house Sydney to Hobart 3 years ago and that was $4,000, and some years earlier a large chest of drawers plus personal items Tokyo to Sydney for $1,000 (appox) so US probably cost more, and remember your electricals won't work there.
Unless you have things with sentimental value or are unique in some way sell and repurchase might be the easiest option |

I moved from Germany to Australia.
Depending if the furniture is anything you want to keep (grandmas stuff, antiques, etc) its more effective buying new stuff here.
p.s.: Buy Australian Made stuff -> good for our economy :) |

'Overseas' is kind of vague, since you could mean southeast Asia, or Europe, or wherever. Cost for shipping large items like furniture is expensive.
Unless the furniture is of great value - antiques, family heirlooms, etc - you'd do better to buy new at your destination. |

Much much cheaper to sell it now and buy new later, it costs thousands to ship furniture interstate here in Australia so I hate to think how much to ship it overseas, plus there's the high likelilhood of the furniture being damaged whilst in transit and then chasing the insurance company who will try and pass the buck onto the transporter who will pass it back to the insurer etc. etc. etc. |

its way cheaper to sell and rebuy
(depending on what condition ur furniture is in!!) |

I'd suggest if you're paying for the move yourself, not employer funded, then have a BIG garage sale.
Only keep the personal things you love and can't replace and ship them.
Start fresh and as has already been mentioned none of your electrical items will work here.
Good luck. |

Depends where you are going overseas. There are some countries where it should be much much cheaper to buy then actually ship it over. |

I would sell but send a few cartons of keepsakes. I know people that have spent $10,000 shipping a container load of things over from NZ and then they haven't looked right in the next home and from some countries the electrical goods are no good to work. so the money you save on shipping and the money you make from selling would go a long way to buy new. and when you buy several electrical or furniture items from a store you can usually get a good deal. |
