How come outside of Queensland all households don't have air conditioning in Australia? |
Like in Queensland each room has one of those ceiling fans but I've yet to live or stay anywhere in Sydney or Melbourne with air conditioning. Are you people crazy? It's the equivalent of living in a snowy country but without heating. And those stone houses are so super hot too. I just stayed in my sisters apartment in Sydney for 6 weeks & I sweltered in there. The temperature was hardly ever below 35 degrees in those concrete walled rooms. I was better off outside at night time than I was in her apartment. And of course, no air conditioning. She has a free standing fan from a store, but it didn't make much difference. Everyone in the other apartments was the same, hardly any had air conditioning. This was an upmarket North Shore suburb too. Crazy! Additional Details Aflumpir - I didn't delete any other questions, other people had them removed. Seems alot of you Aussies, yourself included, are a little oversensitive. Also I used to live in Oz for 3 years so I'm not going by a few households, I'm going by hundreds! I'm comparing as loads of NZers are moving to Oz & even vice versa now & I'm trying to figure out why as personally I think NZers are better off in NZ. Nothing wrong with asking questions trying to understand. Chill out dude. |

I'm American and haven't been to AUS, but I"m surprised AUS doesn't have air conditioning to the extent we have here. Even where I live in Michigan (which is COLD in winter) nearly everyone has air conditioning, and by that I mean CENTRAL AIR -- not the types that fit into walls or windows. (Unfortunately my apartment has a wall unit in the living room and a window unit in the bedroom.)
I read a statistic recently that back in 1973, only 36% of Americans had A/C, but now that figure is something around 85% or more.
I'm surprised AUS doesn't have central air in homes, esp. if it's so hot there in summer. |

Ceiling fans dont make any difference if the air is not cool outside.
My first summer i went to visit in Queensland they had ceiling fans but it was so hot i was never cool the whole time there except when i went out in car or shops. I now only go to visit in winter , my son and family
have a new house with air conditioning and swimming pool.

Queensland is my home state and I can tell you that not everyone has air conditioning.
In fact, not everyone has ceiling fans.
In our home we have air conditioning and ceiling fans but as I say not everyone does.
Sometimes the reason is personal choice and concern for the environment. Other times it's due to lack of money.
If you were so uncomfortable and concerned about your sister you could have bought her a portable free standing air-conditioner. I've been told they work very well.
Even an evaporative cooler would have helped to keep you a bit cooler. |

Not everyone in Queensland has air conditioning either. The last place I rented in Queensland had no ceiling fans and no air conditioning. When we asked the owner to put in an airconditioner he refused because he said they cost too much money then we asked for fans and got the same reply. |

You just got unlucky.
All public buildings and hotels etc have airconditioning and a lot of private homes do as well.
There's no manditory requirement for it, if she's renting she would be paying a cheaper rent. If she paid higher rent, she'd probably get air conditioning.
I live on the north shore and just about everyone around here has it. |

Not every home in Qld has air con or celing fans either you know.
I lived in a house on the sunshine coast a few years back with neither fans or air con or a pool. |

Guess what ? I live in NSW and have ducted air conditioning and a ceiling fan in my house.
In fact everyone I know has air conditioning of some type. Just because you haven't seen one where you have stayed doesn't mean they don't exist !! |

That's strange. Everyone I know has at least ceiling fans in their living areas.
I am one that loves Air conditioning, I sleep with it on all night when its warm and put it on in the lounge room as soon as I wake up. We have 4 reverse cycle systems, we probably shouldv'e got ducted when we built it but didn't. Honestly we only really use the one in the main lounge area and bedrooms, we only use the one in the formal if we want to cool the entire house down.
We have a split level house and the kitchen on the 2nd level is open to the lounge on the bottom, even with the air con on it can be pretty warm in the kitchen, especially when making dinner. We have one of those free standing fans in there too but it doesn't do much.
We also have a pool to cool off in.
Most people I know have Air conditioning, but 1 rellie in particular doesn't and to be honest, they don't really need it. Where there house is they always have a nice cool breeze coming through. They main living doesn't get the sun till 7pm and then you can move to the other side of the house. They have ceiling fans but the breeze seems to be enough for them. Obviously I don't have to live there but when I visit even on boiling days it is bearable plus they have a pool.
Most of the family only got air conditioner after we (being me and my olds) started complaining about the heat, even still it's only ever on when we're there.
I don't get it, I couldn't live without Air Con |

you seem to like comparing everything!!
Not every house in the world can afford Air Conditioning. It is very expensive to purchase and to keep running. Many Australians escape to the beach or the local swimming pool during these times.
Many also just get out a normal osculating fan as they are 1000 times cheaper to purchase and maintain.
Oh yes, I am in Queensland and I do not have air conditioning - we rely on the sea breezes; because we rent and our owners do say that air con is too much!!!
why did you delete yur other two questions?? to embarassed that we were all right?
Edit: MacPerk - how can you base your information off this one person. She has only been to two, maybe three households in Australia!! We find other, cheaper ways to cool off. But many do have air conditioners...dont just go off this one person who compares the amount of brands we get to choose from!! |
