Where else would we drink?

There aren't really that many compared to countries like England. In fact there are only 2 pubs within a 40 minute drive from Nowra to Sussex Inlet

There is a market for pubs in Australia, simple

Pubs are plentiful because drinking is a national past-time.

It's the government way to keep the population down, remember if everyone is pissed they are to buggered to have sex, thus the population is steady.

It just is... It aint a town unless it's got a pub. Most country towns are not called a town unless it has a pub, particularly as you move out west (of the east coast) some have two. Bigger towns have one on every corner. It just is. A lot go in for a quiet after work drink.
