Why do some Australians feel no sympathy for Corby and the Bali 9?
I am suprised that most don't care that they are stuck in a jail in Indonesia, Yes they were caught with drugs but what if it was one of your family members?...

How do Australians feel about the Corby and the Bali 9 cases?

I was just wondering. I am not an Australian but I wonder what they think of their cases! I feel sorry for them some might be ececuted or spend 20 years to life in jail. Horrible!

they knew the risk so don't feel sorry for them it was their choice to break the law in that country

Australians have long lost interest in Corby and Bali 9ers. There are some people around who are still fighting for their cause, but they are guilty and knew the consequences of their actions before they committed the crime/s. They just got greedy.

Anyone who does drugs is stupid, simple.

They did the wrong thing, so I think they should spend some time in jail. However, 2 or 3 or 5 years. Not execution or 20 years or life.

What is the point in that? Have these people given up their right to life because of a stupid mistake?

Especially when the people who planned and executed the Bali bombings, killing hundreds of people, are treated far less harshly.

I hope that diplomacy can bring them home, sooner rather than later. I'm sure they are all idiots, but they don't deserve what happened to them.

Schapelle Corby - still denies innocence and her case was a debacle from the start. Let her come back to Australia and serve her time here if needs be (until enough evidence is found to prove her innocence). Either way, guilty or not, the sentence is too severe.

Bali 9 - bloody idiots! I hate the kind of drug they were trafficking and they have done the wrong thing, However, I would hate to see any of them get the death penalty. I believe they should get a second chance....especially the younger of the 9....everyone is allowed one stupid mistake in their lives. (Only one mind you).

The majority view in Australia goes along the lines of "They did the crime, now do the time"
Whilst the death penalty laws may seem harsh to us "Westerners", they are very, very clearly spelled out by the Australian authorities on all travel documentation and information and on posters, flyers etc displayed and issued by the Indonesian authorities (and other countries in the region too).
They were drug running and they got caught. Tough.

I think the inconsistencies with Qantas and the weighing of baggage etc in the Corby case make it easy to feel sorry for her - despite the media appearances of her family, life imprisonment for a crime that it is possible she DIDN'T commit is horrendous.
While the "Bali 9" cleary DID commit the crimes they are accused of (i.e they were caught red-handed), I feel that the punishment they have received is very harsh - though I acknowledge that the warnings regarding this punishment is made extremely clear before travelling - so I guess they've only got themselves to blame. I do think though, that in both cases, that everyone makes errors in judgement - and these people are paying the ultimate prices. For the amount of drug traffiking that occurs over the UK, Europe, Africa and other places undetected, I think that they could have been spared the punishment if they were simply in another country.

They did drugs - lock em up and throw away the key.

Those drugs may have ended up in a school just like where my kids go - yeah, execute anyone who is intent on ruining the lives of many young people.

Corby only has herself to blame, she tried to smuggle 4.5kg of dope and got caught. I have no problem with the Bali 9 going to prison for drug smuggling but I think the Australian Federal Police should be given a large boot up the bum and heads should roll over the Bali 9. The AFP knew what was happening. They could have waited until the mules brought the drugs into Australia and arrested them here. Instead they tipped off the Indonesian police.

There are strict rules laid down that Australia does not provide assistance where the death penalty is involved. The AFP had no right and no obligation to inform Indonesia and by Australian law and practice should not have done so. They got away with it because they knew Little Lying Johnny wouldn't care. I feel sorry for the Bali 9 not because they didn't deserve punishment but because they were betrayed by an Australian Government that should have been looking after their interests and instead informed the Indonesians.

two different answers here

Corby- I am unsure of her guilt so frankly let her serve her term death is certainly un called for- maybe even send her home (at her own expense) and serve her time out here in oz.

The bali 9- death seems appropriate- frankly they knew what they were doing and knew the penalty for doing what they tried to do- they are blatantly guilty so there is no excuse there at all. Frankly I am glad they were caught think of all the kids/ people they could have killed if those drugs had of got onto the streets of australia- no they deserve death- that is a fair outcome for their crime.

The Corbys are stupid white trash as evidenced by their theatrics at the sentencing. I feel no sympathy for Corby or her family.

The Bali 9 are foolish and greedy. I feel sorry for their families.
