How do New Zealanders feel about Australia and its people and vice-versa? |
I have never been to either country, but I would love to visit both... Is the relationship between these two nations at all comparable to the relationship between The United States and Canada? Additional Details Super answers so far! I can't wait to go visit... I think it is very similar to the relationship between U.S. and Canada... yes, there are a lot of people on both sides of the border who hate the others, but I know a lot on both sides who like and even adore each other.
I am a Canadian who loves the U.S. and my girlfriend is American, my siter is married to a Yank and lives Stateside... but there are things I don't like about the U.S. and there are also things I don't like about Canada, but i think our relationship is something to be treasured.... By the bye... every Kiwi and Aussie I have met here in North America has been really cool. |

I'm an Aussie and engaged to a kiwi, and yes there is a bit of banter between the two countries especially when it comes to sport i.e rugby league and rugby union and the cricket plus the odd joke about the sheep shagging being done over in kiwi land ha ha but i think that's about as far as it goes,we stood side by side through world wars and they are one of our closest neighbours so deep down i think we like each other -not sure if its the same as the u.s and Canada because i always thought the Canadians didn't like the yanks? (I'm probably wrong) and from my perspective n.z is a beautiful place and the people i know from there are normal down to earth good people similar to Aussies but also a lot different in other ways.
OH AND TO ANY KIWI'S BAAH! this means hello (i think) lol :) |

New Zealanders and Australians are great rivals in all sporting contests, particularly those where they are the best in the world such as cricket, rugby and netball but trans-Tasman rivalry occurs in any sport.
Both tell jokes at the expense of the other but regard each other as close friends. |

we pretty much love to hate each other. I would say its similar to other friendly rivalrys. I guess its always the smaller place that "hates" the other place more as the larger place does not care as much!!! (its the same in New Zealand with Auckland vs the rest of the country!!).
Kiwis love to beat the aussies in anything.....mostly sport tho.
Even tho there is this competition we can see the good things of austrlaia and love their tax rate, higher rates of pay and better health service and is why hindreds of thousands of kiwis live in australia!!! |

Yes about the same as the US and Canada.
There will always be some 'rift' or 'jokes' between the two country's, they both just think they are better than each other.
Both country's have their own quality and are unique. |

I see it as a friendly rivalry. Sure all the sports things that others have mentioned. I've lived in both countries and if you have a good sense of humour and can give as you get you're fine:) Loved my years in Melbourne. |

Its like good old fashioned sibling rivalry we like to beat them at sport and stir them up and have a laugh at them and with them but we would always back each other up in a fight.
And I admire NZ for standing up and not getting pushed around by the big boys of world politics. |

One thing New Zealand has at the moment is plenty of water
We use to be aloud to take our own when we went to visit but now we are restricted to 100mls.
That is not going to help the aussie water shortage much |

as a new zealander living in Australia i have a far idea about this ... Australia are kind of a big brother to nzers ... in there minds they have a better country etc and in this way we see them as arrogant and loud while we are the nzers are more English and reserved but we are two very different country's and our peoples very different ... aus is very multi cultural with lots of Greeks Italians and Slavs while NZ is English with dutch and Polynesians .... and we are worlds apart in our treatment of the indigenous populations aust relationship with the aboriginals is 100 years behind NZ and our treatment of Maoris |
