For setting up bank accounts, while it is not hard (like it is in the UK) to set up bank accounts for newcommers to OZ, the banks will charge you like wounded bulls to do it. The commonwealth Bank of Australia actually has a service set up in London exactly for this service, id get in contact with them they not only set up all the necessary bank accounts in OZ, but they also give you a better than market exchange rate for going through them, they can also organise morages and stuff like that too.
you can check out their services at

Start with the Department of Immigrations website http://www.immi.gov.au/. Once you have checked the relevant information on the website you might want to seek advice from their office in your country - http://www.immi.gov.au/contacts/overseas/index.htm. Good Luck.

Australia House will help. If your husband has a job to go to you will be granted a visa for a limited stay. You will have to apply for permanent residence when you are there. If you are on the "preferred" emigrants list you have a better chance of being given permanent residence. ie: doctor, nurse, engineer, teacher (although teachers have to take the Australian examination before being allowed to teach there) dentist etc. Don't think that you can just "swan" into Australia and take up residence. They are not as stupid with emigration as the British Government and their Laws are very strict indeed, and so they should be. Its a great Country, great people and 80% of the worlds most toxic creatures live there. Isn't that nice to know ?
