If there was a referendum in Australia the majority would vote for the Republic of Australia.
That way both the UK and Australia are winners.

If they suddenly disappeared tomorrow I don't think I would notice, they are no longer relevant to me |

We don't pay too much attention to them, the Royal family hold no particular power here as we are self goverened. We show our respects by having the Queens head on our money and the union jack in our flag.
Over the past few decades we have had a couple of referendums on the Monarchy vs Republic issue, but it seems every time it goes to the vote the Australian people are pretty much divided right down the middle. It is not a contentious issue amongst the people, just something the politicians bring up every time they can't think of something else to argue about.
The Queen came to Australia and opened the commonwealth games in 2006, but previous to that I don't think she has been here since the 80's sometime? Not too sure of that though? |

Well I am an Australian by choice , not birth , but have lived here almost all my life....
If you look closely at the majority of Republics in the world you will find very few other than western democracies that have stability & a system of parliamentary democracy that works consistently....
We can mock the British system all we like but it has been consistent over time & has helped to give this nation a solid base for the future.
As far as the monarchy is concerned , I believe Lizzie has done a great job but as for her family of misfits .....no confidence in any of them ...particularly her eldest son who talks to trees !

I think it depends on who you ask. The older generations revere the royal family and follow everything the Queen does and watches all the Queen specials whereas the younger generation really couldn't care less. Me? I really don't find them important. What have they done for us? How do they help us out? (besides assistance with the bushfire victims .. but then quite a lot of world leaders offered assistance in one form or another). |

They are of little significance here these days. Princess Diana was special and a favourite of all, but if Charles ever got to become king then I think that would be the end of the monarchy both in Australia and UK. They lost a lot of credibility when Diana died and Camilla will never be accepted as Queen. Viva la republic. |

Personally ,I think it is time to toss them out that is.I do not really care about them at all without the royal title they are just like any other family. |

Generally Australia is divided by this. Without the Royals some womens magazines would have nothing to write about.
Personally I feel it is an outdated system and the sooner we sever our ties with them the better. |

Their biggest contribution nowadays is magazine sales..... a Womens Weekly or New Idea would be lost without a royal story. We were all saddened when Princess Diana died. Apart from that we're just a teenaged colony who still love our parents.... but can't wait to break free from them. |

I loathe them and all they stand for and can't wait until Australia is a Republic. |
