There are three different types of visa available to tourists ... which you will be as you are visiting
1. Tourist visa (subclass 676) - A temporary visa generally granted for a stay of 3 months or 6 months. In certain circumstances a stay of 12 months may be granted.
2. Sponsored Family Visa (subclass 679) - For people seeking to visit family in Australia. Formal sponsorship by an Australian citizen or permanent resident is required.
3. Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) - An electronically stored authority for short-term visits to Australia of up to 3 months. Available to passport holders from 32 countries and regions. Applications must be made from outside Australia.

Visa full text for: australia (au)

Warning: non-compliance with entry regulations will result in a penalty of aud 5,000.- for transporting airline.

Visa required, except for:
1. Nationals of australia;
2. Permanent residents of norfolk island, holding passports
endorsed with the authority to reside indefinitely in
norfolk island, who must apply for a "permanent residents
of norfolk island visa" at the border;
3. Nationals of new zealand who must apply for a special
category visa (scv) on arrival by completing a passenger
card;
4. Personnel from the united nations mission of support in
timor leste (unmiset) and related humanitarian
organisations travelling to and from timor leste and
other parts, holding a valid passport or travel document
and an unmiset identity card or a letter from the un
identifying them as personnel from un related operations;

Issue:
1. Prior to arrival: common visa (existence of a visa is
verified electronically by airlines prior to boarding and
by immigration officials on arrival in australia) by:
A. Australian missions overseas and certain travel agents;
B. Offices of the department of immigration and
multicultural and indigenous affairs in australia.
2. Prior to arrival: electronic travel authority (eta) for
tourist or business travel, instead of a visa. There is
no physical evidence of an eta in the passport. Existence
of an eta is verified electronically by eta participating
airlines prior to boarding and by immigration officials
on arrival in australia.
most travel agents issue eta. Eligible clients can also
apply for an eta over the internet. There are 3 eta
types: visitor/tourist eta "v"; long validity business
eta "bl" (issued against a fee); short validity (977)
business eta "bs".
eta may be issued to:
A. Nationals of andorra, austria, belgium, brunei, canada,
denmark, finland, france, germany, greece, iceland,
ireland (rep. Of), italy, japan, korea (rep.),
liechtenstein, luxembourg, malaysia, malta, monaco,
netherlands, norway, portugal, san marino, singapore,
spain, sweden, switzerland, u.s.a. and vatican city;
B. Holders of british passports "united kingdom of great
britain and northern ireland" endorsed "british citizen";
C. Holders of british passports endorsed "british national
(overseas)" who must be residents of hong kong (sar
china) and apply for eta in hong kong (sar china);
D. Holders of hong kong (sar china) passports;
E. Holders of chinese taipei passports, who must be
residents of chinese taipei and apply for eta in chinese
taipei;
etas are obtained via:
- travel agents in countries where the eta procedures have
been introduced; or
- participating airlines. Most major airlines flying to
australia are eta capable;
- the internet at: www.eta.immi.gov.au
warning: make sure the air carrier is eta capable and can
verify the eta for boarding ("screen prints" of an eta
are not acceptable).
3. Prior to arrival: electronic tourist visa (e676):
citizens from the following countries can apply for a
tourist visa on the internet
(http://www.immi.gov.au/e_visa) prior to travel:
A. Bahrain, cyprus, czech republic, estonia, hungary,
kuwait, latvia, lithuania, oman, poland, qatar, slovak
rep., slovenia and united arab emirates; and
B. Those mentioned in 2. Eta. A., b. And d. Above.
if such a visa is granted, the visa holder does not
require a visa in his/her passport. This system is
different from the eta. Note: an electronic tourist visa
cannot be applied for via an airline at check-in.
4. Prior to arrival: long validity sub-class 456 visa issued
electronically to holders of an apec (asia-pacific
economic cooperation) business travel card (abtc).
no visa attached to the passport. Passengers only need to
hold a valid passport and the abtc for check-in. The back
of the card must state that it is valid for travel to
australia and passport details should match those on the
card.
airlines may conduct an electronic check to confirm the
sub-class 456 visa.
abtc is available to:
A. Nationals of brunei, chile, china (people's rep.),
chinese taipei, indonesia, japan, korea (rep.), malaysia,
new zealand, peru, philippines and thailand;
B. Holders of hong kong (sar china) passports;
C. Permanent residents of hong kong (sar china) holding any
valid and acceptable travel document.
Note: for more detailed information please visit

you can only stay here if you are a resident or a citizen. you cannot stay if your visa runs out. as far as i am aware, you have to apply for another one, but you might have to leave the country (even just go to NZ) while its processed. do the right thing by the country & follow the rules & the country will do right by you. best of luck to you :o)
