G'day,
The Twelve Apostles is located on the Great Ocean Road, a few km after Geelong. There are actually quite a number of sightseeing spots that you might be interested to stop by such as London Bridge (already collapsed), The Grotto, Loch Ard Gorge etc.
What I usually do (this is what I call "The Asian Style Tour") is depart from Melbourne by 6am (as early as possible). This is good to avoid traffic congestion if you decide to go during weekdays. Take Westgate Fwy - Princes Hwy - Geelong - Great Ocean Road. Once you've seen the Bay of Islands, then it is Warrnambool. If you dun feel like going up to Warrnambool, then you can head north to reach either Terang or Camperdown (via Cobden) and back to Melbourne via Princes Hwy. Do this, then you'll be able to reach Melb by say... 6pm or little bit more, depending on how long would you stop in every spot.
Hope this helps. Enjoy the trip |

If you're heading from Melbourne city centre ... then it's aproximately 2 and half hours drive. But few of the apostles collapsed few years back ... no more 12 :) |

Hi, My husband and i did the trip from Adelaide to Melbourne back in January, aside from doing the other way around (12 Apostles to Melbourne.) there is absolutley no reason that this trip cannot be made in less than 6 hours, in that time we also got to see London Bridge, The Bay of Martyrs and Bells Beach with a few stops to towns on the way....Depending on where you live in Melbourne there may be one toll road, but there are ways around that too. Have a great trip. |

If you only want the 12 Apostles, the road through Colac (west of Geelong) is smoother. You can pass slower traffic easier while the Great Ocean Road is windy and slows to less than 80 km/hr at times
Look at the petrol and tiredness factors, and you may prefer to take a joy flight over the 12 Apostles from Barwon Heads or Torquay airdrome. |

You'd be going to Port Campbell so 3-4 hours..Why would you want to get back in a day. There is cheap Accommodation around there--"Caravan Parks".Fantastic Views.I recommend it to any visitor to Melbourne. |

Tolls depend on which road out of Melbourne you take. If you go across the Westgate you should be fine.
The Apostles could be done in a day (just about anywhere in Victoria is available for a day trip), about 5 hours round trip. The Great Ocean Road is worth meandering along, though.
"London Bridge" has collapsed, but I think the rest is still worth seeing. |

About 1 hour drive usually and you'll see a great view of the 12 Apostles and there are no tolls on the way there unless you take city link which is around the Melb area. |
