I think it's a day - or thereabouts, it's 9902 miles. Is it your first time in Melbourne? Welcome!! You'll love it here :)

Takes a looooong time.
I flew from Toronto to Sydney several years ago. Toronto is sorta kinda close to Detroit so the time should be about the same. Left Toronto about 4 pm, landed in Hawaii around 10 pm, but that was Hawaii time. Left about an hour later and arrived in Fiji around 2 am. But remember we lost a day crossing the International Date Line. Left Fiji an hour later and arrived in Sydney around 9 am. Figure Melbourne would be about 2 hours more. So, well, you count up the hours.

ponting
it will take 10 hours

Gday
I have to fly from Melbourne to Seattle takes about 18 1/2 hrs if I could go direct, so say Detroit to LA 3 and a bit hrs, LA to Melb bout 17 1/2 hrs. From Detroit you will probably have to do connector flights so the total time will vary depending on how long you have to wait. As I'm aware the only cities that fly direct into Melbourne are LA, San Francisco and Houston.
Also some flights take longer than others due wind and weather. The times I have given here are for ideal conditions.
