During summer time there are actually 5 time zones
western aus - western summer time
south aus - central summer time
NT - central standard time
Queensland - eastern standard
victoria.nsw.tasmania - eaastern summer
other times there are only 3

Generally there are three time zones which people know about with the variations for summer time /daylight saving. However most people do not know there is a fourth time zone tucked into the south eastern corner of Western Aust. that runs half an hour later than central time.

Brisbane, Sydney Melbourne and Hobart has Australian Standard Time (AEST)
Adelaide and Darwin is half an hour behind Sydney (ACST)
Perth is a loner and is 2 hours behind (AWST)
When Daylight savings are in, All cities exept Brisbane, Darwin and Perth are 1 hour infront.
So that means that in winter, Adelaide is half hour behind Brisbane. In summer, Adelaide is half hour IN FRONT!

Teetotal is almost right....you forgot that Tasmania goes onto Summer time a month before Vic/Nsw and comes off it a month later.
To answer your question, we have SO many timezones it's not funny. That's because the country is made of states and they all want to be different, even though there isn't much difference between them. The federal govt can't do anything to change them so we're left with this stupid situation of everyone being on a different timezone even tho they are at the same latitude !!!
And now you're wondering why Qld doesn't change too....good question. It's because the curtains will fade and the cows will get confused. Seriously....that's how they think up there!!!

For the benefit of Tonyb....just the one, Queensland time and the other states please themselves!

As the person above said...there are the three zones. However, during summer we effectively get a fourth time zone as Queensland stands apart from the other states in the Eastern time-zone by not adopting Daylight savings (1 hour adjustment).
