How many people are killed by Kangaroos in Australia each year?

I want to be able to check the source of the answer. Thanks.

I don't think there would be any or at least extremely rare. If it ever happens it is most likely to be big news all over every TV station. All my time in Australia, I have never heard of one case.

IF...you also count people dying in car accident because their cars hit a roo or swerve to avoid them and crashed, then there may be a few.

You can always try the Australian Bureau of statistics website. They might have something.

(if you are from overseas... some explanation: roos can be inflict horrible injuries but they are not "dangerous" creatures. They don't go around attacking and killing people. They would normally run away when approached. They become dangerous if cornered or provoked.)

Cheers

Apart from road deaths caused by hitting or swerving to miss kangaroos, the only reliably documented case of a fatality from a kangaroo attack occurred in New South Wales in 1936. A hunter was killed when he tried to rescue his two dogs from a heated fray.

Proving a negative is virtually impossible, so no evidence I'm afraid though I've included the Wiki article mentioning the documented fatality.

It depends if you mean directly killed or killed as a result of a kangaroo. People are killed all the time in cars because they hit a kangaroo or swerve to miss one. There's definently been more than one fatality as a result of a kangaroo attack though. Red kangaroos are very dangerous, and when you go to zoos they tell you not to approach them unless they approach you. I was in cabin once in Halls Gap (country Victoria) and we had food out, and I turned around and there was a kangaroo in our cabin (i nearly had a heart attack) it was nearly as tall as me, (i'm 5'9) so I don't see why they couldn't have killed someone. At the same place the man who worked in the kiosk pulled up the roller thing for the window one morning and i was watching because a kangaroo was standing outside the window, and as soon as he pulled up the shutter thing the kangaroo jumped over the bench on top of the guy, he was okay because the kangaroo was only interested in the food but he had some nasty cuts from its claws. True story i was there to witness it.

hahaa - i've actually never heard of someone dying and couldn't find anything on it. i don't think they've killed anyone but they can kick and bite pretty hard.

bla;
Umm... not many? Haven't really heard of deaths by Kangaroos, then again I don't live out in the bush, etc. so I'm not really around them.

Two hundred and thirty. Or two hundred and thirty-five if you include tree kangaroos. You won't find a source though; the Australian government goes to great lengths to cover it up. You can imagine what it would do to the tourism industry if it got out. Especially the face eating stuff. Here's an exerpt from a documentary about kangaroos that Kevin Rudd doesn't want you to see: http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=qOZDFzIaCDY

hahaha im aussie and ive never heard of that happening, although im sure it does! kangaroos are bloody vicious sometimes! a few years ago i was chased by one and had to take shelter in some guys garage hahaha. But in the roos defence we were throwing rocks at it.

But that being said roos are able to kill quite easily with those claws they have, so im sure some moron somewhere has tried to box one and ended up mauled to death.

Mel
I vaguely remember hearing in the past few years of someone dying after they kicked a Kangaroo. The Kangaroo wanted revenge and killed the man.

This is the only time I have heard of anyone being directly killed by one.

Despite common perception Kangaroos are carnivores, who's main prey is human! They like to lure naive tourists in with their cute looks and then bite their head off. Of course the Australian government hides this up ... not good for tourism!

Q
Thousands.... the Roos are taking over.
