Just b/c you are 25 dont mean anything you are still someone baby...They are concern and want to hear from you... you are lucky that they want you to call once a week some families are not like that at all they could care less... I live in another stated and every two weeks I send my grandmother a card |

Call home every week. Your mom needs to know you are ok. My sister (40 years old) has lived in NM for about 15 years. My parents live here in chicago. She has called every Sunday for 15 years. Make your mom happy. |

you are going far away and it will not kill you to call 1 time a week for a while tell your family get use to the idea of you being so far away |

Once every couple of months seems very seldom if your folks have been used to comminicating with you regularly. Remember you might be a big guy now at 25 but to your parents you are still their son. If nothing else it's a lack of respect not to want to share how your new life is going. |

I speak to my mum and dad 2 or 3 times a week and i'm 37. It doesn't hurt me and it makes them very happy.
Once a week wouldn't kill you and it will just reassure your family that you are okay, putting their minds at rest. It wouldn't be fair of you to be off having a great time while your family sits home worrying about you!! |

Call once every week, even just for 10 minutes. Let your family and friends know that everything's fine. You won't want them to worry about you every day. |

I'll bet there are many people here who would give anything to be able to pick up a phone and talk to their mom.
25 is an adult, of course! And, adults have responsibilities. One of those responsibilities is seeing to it that your family is not stressed out with worry.
So, be a man, and call your mom every week, for *her* sake. |

Maybe once every 2 weeks (mark your calendar so you don't forget!).......even throw in a postcard every now and then (instead of calling) to appease MUM...lol
Hey maybe you could teach your mum to use sms and then she can send you constant questions of...are you ok?, are you eating enough?, are you behaving yourself?....and...I miss you, I miss you so much, when are you coming home?
Naaah......better forget that idea......LOL |

Once a week is reasonable. Family will be concerned if they don't hear from you. Remember, it's not as if they'll be able to see you on a daily basis.. |

I lived 6 hours from home for 4 of my 5 years of college and then 2000 mi from home for my last year and I think that calling should not be mandatory. You should not feel obligated to call and check in weekly. I do think though that your family thinks they will miss you and are interested with your life in NZ so try to keep them informed. Overall, I think you should call because you want to, not because you feel obligated to. If they miss you, they can call you too! Fill the gaps between phone calls with an email. |

parents worry as you see from your replys. May I suggest you take an old mobile with you, when you get there buy a vodaphone sim (I did, it was cheap and worked well), call, text home it is v cheap, and familly can call/text you back. When they get there first bill, then maybe they won't call as often and leave you in peace (not met to sound nasty) |

If they want you to call, suggest tat they pay for reverse charge calls. They will probably tell you not to bother. Enjoy your stay. |

Being a parent and someone's child, I can see both sides of this question. A couple of times a month should do. Can you E-mail? When you get to NZ, buy an international phone card to get the best long distance price. |

I think once a week might be good to start... it will give your parents some peace of mind. Perhaps stretch it to two weeks... but I'd probably call every week myself (and I'm 47 and do this anyway) just to touch base. Keep in mind your parents aren't going to be around forever... enjoy them while they are here. |

My girlfriend went backpacking last year , She found it a lot cheaper just to send E-mails. she also brought a sim card for her mobile for every Country she visited, so people could contact her with ease. |

Call home as often as you can. Now matter how old you are you still remain a child to your parents. they will always miss you. |

Only call home when needed. Some women call home all the time and develop "home sickness". Males have shown less likely to develop home sickness. Only call home when needed and the cheepest way is by phone card.
It is recommened to call home once or twice a week so family know that you are safe. Familys who don't here often get worried.
If a disatser or Terror Attack occors (prey to god, I hope not) this would be the perfect time to make contact with family.
Good Luck, Enjoy the wonders of NZ! |

why not. it takes you atleast 5-10 minutes and you can stay in touch with the loved ones. you can't take people for granted, especially ones you love. |

It doesn't matter how old you are. You're going to be thousands of miles away from your parents. A ten minute call once a week won't hurt you. I'm 47 and I call my mother once a week because I love her and want to make sure she's okay (she's 75). Won't you want to know everything's okay at home? They'll want to know the same about you. |

1c a week or fortnight at least. Think about if you had children & they moved far away. Would you like to here from them often to know they are alright? Do the right thing & give your mother piece of mind to know your doing fine & that you miss her! |

Trust me, once a week is perfect, otherwise if you don't call in a couple of months they may have moved, I know from experience Lived in nz for 2 years. By the way where are you going to live? oh and get a talk'n'save card. 3.26 cents per minute anytime, anywhere. |

I would say once a month would be good enough. Especially if you have e-mail and e-mail often. |
