Live in Australia for 20 years then you will pick up the accent.

If you try and put one on, you will sound like a Galah !!

iceman ,
Nicole Kidman is Australian.

her parents were Australian, she may of been born in Hawaii. and her parents stayed there for a bit coz of her fathers job,
but shes lived here nearly all of life, she grew up here,
she has the accent and the attitude.

she's Australian.

Mel
Don't even try, foreigners THINK they can do our accent and that they sound hot, us Aussies listen to them and think they're a joke.

So instead of insulting our country and sounding like an idiot, just talk normally. Only Australians can speak like Australians.

zucchinisyoucantkeepagoodonedown
Lol... Well it may not be "impossible", but Americans do seem to find it inordinately difficult. Even Meryl Streep couldn't nail it, and as for the attempt in "The Simpsons", it was pitiful.

Well first of all I'd like to wish Mikey bon voyage & wish him all the best when he leaves this hellhole & settles where ever he decides is better ..

I am not Aussie born but came here as a small child & don't have a broad accent but , in my opinion , it is a pointless exercise to try to deliberately cultivate a foreign accent. Locals see straight through it , it impresses no one & never quite makes it !

The best idea is to live in a community & gradually you will pick up expressions & dialect differences ...maybe even a passable accent ...but it takes time !

Assuming you're American, the big one would be not to emphasise 'r' at the end of words, so, phoenetically, for example, instead of 'Wa-teR', you'd say 'Wa-teh'.
Lengthen your A's: for example, were you to say 'half', instead of using a short 'a' as in 'at', make it a longer 'ahhh' sound.

Drop the R's and flatten the A's?

Personally, i believe that you have to either be born in Australia, or moved here when really young to have an Australian accent.

Its nothing that can be faked..

I've lived in Australia all my life and I still don't have an Australian accent.

I liked Steve Irwin's Aussie accent! I could listen that accent all day long - from ANY Aussie - :D

Ken E
Live here about 5 years, and you still will not have it. But you will be closer. If you want the educated accent, listen to Australian Broadcasting Commission Radio National online and pod casts

blanket
I've yet to see an american who can pull of an Aussie accent properly, don't make a fool of yourself! lol

V!C
For example like: flower in Australian you says flowa
today= to die
nine= noint

i don't know why you would want an australian accent. any one who speaks like an australian is a dumbass. and i just want to point out that a lot of you are saying that you have to live in australia to have an australian accent but everyone i know is australian and most of them talk normally.
