You can't really learn an accent without listening to it. But I've always been good at imitating uhstraylian and the most important things you can do to sound like one is to add a vocalized twang to your words. It kind of permeates the sound and can make an "ay" sound more like "I" but not completely or it sounds fake. You also need to talk in a relaxed way. The flow of the accent is fairly rapid and has good enunciation at the start of words, in contrast to slow accents like American deep southern.

You apparently have a computer, just collect as much audio and video as you can of Australians talking, then make audio recordings of yourself trying to imitate them, and compare. You will never hear what you really sound like unless you hear a recording of yourself. The next best way is to stand facing a corner of the room, which approximates your real sound. Then just work on it.

They say "mate" a lot, and a lot of other words like "bloody" that are said in England too, but don't compare them to the bloody Pommies, they'll get angry.

if you were not born and raised in australia you will never get the accent right

people tend to look like fools when they try

No one will think big of you. You won't get treated any 'better'. Australia is a multicultural country anyway. We are all generally accepting. I don't see the need to do that. You will just offend others in reality if they think you have a problem with how they speak.

If you're not born in Australia, you will never get it right.

Generally speaking, the Australian female has a tendency to raise her voice up at the end of her sentences. If you are not use to the accent you may wonder if she has finished what she is saying.

A good example of this is on an Australian morning show call "Sunrise" on channel seven. It runs Monday to Friday between 6.00am and 9.00am. You can watch a video segment of Sunrise on youtube.

Keep watching the video still you see one of the hosts called Melissa (Mel). She is the Blonde female sitting at the studio deck with a man with glasses nicknamed Kochie. You can hear for yourself what I am talking about. As well you will hear interviews with every day Aussies to get a good idea of our accent.
From an Aussie female Sydney sider NSW.

You need to let your bottom lip drop with your jaw to let the flies in so you can irregularly manouvre your tongue in a fashion which befits our unique twang! LMAO hee hee !!
