I would suggest top of the south island either the marlborough sounds or nelson/tasman
see
http://www.lochmaralodge.co.nz/
http://awaroalodge.co.nz/
these two places would be fantastic and could cater for all your needs, plenty of beautiful walking tracks etc
or for a more general idea check out
http://www.holidayhomes.co.nz/for-rent/new-zealand/south-island/marlborough/
http://www.holidayhomes.co.nz/for-rent/new-zealand/south-island/nelson-golden-bay/

for hundreds and hundreds of beautiful holiday homes that would give you a more independant stay (you'd have to clean the houses when you leave)

theres also http://portage.co.nz/Home in the marlborough sounds, your spoilt for choice really!

Bay of Islands, only trouble is that half of NZ is there in early January.

Try a mountain retreat around Queenstown.

All righty then: I know there are a lot of New Zealanders living in Australia, but you may want to post your question in the New Zealand section to get up to date information.

It would be their summer over there,,My brother has lived there for over 14 years,I would suggest the top of the north island around the Rotarua area

Mel
I too would be looking at Queenstown. It's pretty central to the mountains, milford sound and the beautiful lake at its end.

ANF
Sounds a great idea but the 23 hours travelling could spoil it a bit.
Try South Africa in the Cape Winelands. Only 11 airs overnight flight. A wonderful place to go.

abov.bey honeymoon? cozy cottages? nature? Picture this, snuggled up under a rug in front of a log fire place, white powdery snow falling outside, Sipping on hot chocolate. The Deer coming for their feed, the little fawns dancing around.

This can be you if you act now, we have lots of these hideaways here in Quebec, and only an hour from Montreal. think about it, this could be a chance of a lifetime.
