I'm American, my fiance is New Zealander--what can I cook for him?

That he'll really like? I want to start practicing now (not like I can cook well to begin with;) but since he is taking a big hit for me by moving to American for the time being, I want to make him feel at home.

I know the diff between Aussi and Kiwi duh!!

Thanks for the recipe--so that's what he's talking about when he says "pie."

I live in the rural American South, all we have here is hogs and chicken (I know, I know) so coming by lamb is going to be hard, gotta go out of my way to go to the big city to get it. But I have never cooked it before, that's why I am need some ideas.

You can never beat a good Roast lamb with roast vege's.

Pavlova - This meringue dessert
oh and the Bacon & Egg pie - it's SO easy to make.

**************************************...

Bacon and egg pie
A classic New Zealand recipe for meatlovers everywhere. It's great with homemade pastry!

Pastry:
25g plain flour
55g butter
2-3 Tbsp cold water
Pinch of salt

Filling:
170g bacon
5 eggs
100g cheese
2 large tomatoes, sliced
3 Tbsp chopped parsley
Pinch of salt
Freshly ground black pepper

Pastry: Mix flour and salt in a bowl, then add cubes of butter. Rub butter into flour until there are no lumps, then slowly add and stir in enough cold water to bind dough. Wrap in clingwrap and chill for 10-15 minutes before use.

Filling: Remove rind from bacon and cut bacon into small pieces. Have all ingredients on-hand. Roll out half of pastry mixture and line a greased pie dish. On your pastry, layer bacon then parsley, onion and half the cheese. Arrange half the slices of tomato on top of the cheese and season with salt and pepper. Break eggs onto the tomato layer, breaking the yolks as you go. Top with leftover cheese and tomato. Wet edges of pastry and place the second half of the pastry (rolled out) on top. Make small slashes on top of the pie and glaze with beaten egg or milk. Bake at 180°C for one hour. Remove and leave to cool.

Edit - yes NZ (and Australian's) love their meat pies, mince pie, bacon & egg pie, curry pie, chicken, steak and mushroom pie, the list is endless. These pies are sold in any 'corner store', cafeterias, petrol stations, truck stops etc... and are made hand-sized containing largely minced meat and gravy and the add-ins. (whatever you want to put in)
Here's some samples, http://www.kiwikuisine.com/products.asp
.....traditionally served with liberal amounts of tomato sauce on top !

If you want to impress hubby to be, buy yourself a 'Edmonds Cook book' Every kiwi-household owns one!

Also take a look at Kiwiana, so you understand a few things when your man mentions things LOL

I found this: http://allrecipes.com/Search/Recipes.aspx?WithTerm=new%20zealand%20recipes but there aren't many recipes on there. You could always try whatever your favorite internet cooking site it and look for specific recipes from New Zealand. Can you ask him what his favorite foods are? Or can you ask his parents/siblings/whatever family?

And as for the lamb, any reputable large chain grocery store will probably have lamb in their butcher area.

Good luck.
