Adelaide is a lot cheaper than Sydney for housing. and a lot smaller and cleaner. so you can get around a lot easier. like Duncan c said Sydney is only an hour and a half flying time away so if you want to visit Sydney you can fly there easily enough. |

The cost of living in Sydney is very high, and it is a large city. Adelaide is much smaller and has the reputation of being boring. Perhaps I am boring, but I would be happy to visit Sydney once or twice then go home and never go again. Adelaide, on the other hand, is quite nice :) I guess it depends what sort of family you are. If you are into bright lights and partying, (or expect your kids will turn out that way) then Sydney might be a better choice. If you aren't such party animals, then go to Adelaide. There's clubs and pubs if you want them, but the city is smaller and a hell of a lot cleaner. |

Same, I've visited Sydney four years ago, and have wanted to live there ever since.
Haven't been to Adelaide so can't comment on that
But as far as cost goes, I don't understnad the problem with Sydney
Everything there is so much cheaper than here in Britain.
For example, i know someone that's lived in student accomodation in both Sheffield and Sydney. In Sydney he shared a massive house with 3 others for so little. But in Sheffield the homes are smaller, more expensive and the whole environment is no where near as nice.
With a family of three I'd reccomend living in the suburbs of Sydney. I've been to the northern suburbs and places like Glenwood or Kellyville are two examples of places that would be perfect, in my opinion for a family of three. |

Any Brit will find Sydney summers extremely hot and humid. I lived there, and loved it, but would opt for somewhere further away now.
Why not check out the Adelaide newspapers to see if you can get a feel of the place? Rental costs, leisure activities, schools etc.?

Adelaide would be better with a family as it is smaller you can live closer to the city, it's sooo easy to get around, and it is very save. It is the "festival state" and we get every festival in the world here so there is always something happening and it's all very family friendly. It is also the wine state! The beach is only minutes away from the city as are the hills. It has a very dry climate and winter is not as cold as Sydney, when i lived in Sydney it was hats and scarfs but in Adelaide it's just a jacket! |

Hi, I am also a Brit. I lived in Sydney with my family, wife and 2 girls and mooved to adelaide. In sydney houses are expencive and the crime rate is rising so I moved to South Australia with my family. Its cheeper and cleaner. Ok there is not as much as Sydney but its only 1 + 1/2 hours by plane for a holiday. Come to Adelaide for a look and you will like it.
Good luck |

If you want to own a house avoid Sydney (unless you earn a big wage) Sydney house prices are insane |

If you intend to buy a house, Adelaide is the place for you... and as others have said, the cost of living is much lower. Adelaide has what they call a Mediterranean climate, whereas Sydney is wetter, though not as much as Brisbane. I prefer Adelaide, and for its size it is a very interesting place culaurally and in terms of being able to get around it is miles ahead of Sydney (ooops, I mean kilometres ahead!) |

Sydney has nothing that Adelaide doesn't offer.
My family were in the same situation 5 years ago and we moved to Adelaide. I have coped very well people are very friendly schools are great. adelaide has good (famliy-safe) beaches and shopping and is much more affordable than Sydney. Sydney is much busier than Adelaide which i think has a more laid back feel about it. i think that a family would settle in very well in Adelaide.
its a big decision, maybe you could book a short holiday to Adelaide to check it out before you decide.. |

I live in Adelaide but have visited Sydney. Adelaide is a very nice, quiet city to live with a family. The travel time between places is definitely shorter then Sydney and the housing prices are lower. Adelaide still provides lots of entertainment for the whole family and beautiful wine regions. |

I have lived in both and am currently living in Adelaide with 3 children and I would go for Adelaide - probably about a quarter of the population of Sydney and more family friendly. If it was me I would definitely have a closer look at Adelaide as well as Sydney. |

if simply for cost of housing - you'll find Adelaide better for a family.
Have a look at the suburb you've been told your work is at then find it on Whereis.com.au to check out some suburbs that might be within the distance you're willing to travel each day. (Note that Australians are willing to travel further on a daily basis thatn most Brits cos of the size difference of the countries)
When you've got some suburbs look them up on realestate.com.au and see what the housing prices (rent/ buy) are like. That should at leats be a starting point in your decision.
Congrats on the job offers, and good luck! |

Adelaide, is pretty boring.
Just traveled right the way around Australia and if i was going to live anywhere, it would be Byron Bay or Melbourne. they both have a good atmosphere and there's plenty to do. Adelaide is a place you need a car to get anywhere, forgett public transport anywhere apart from Sydney or Melbourne.
Good luck, im sure if you dont like the place you move to you can always try another place. |

I have lived in both South Australia and New South Wales and am currently residing in Adelaide. Both are great places to live.
Sydney does get very humid, whereas Adelaide has a hot, dry heat.
Housing is more affordable in Adelaide and you can live closer to Adelaide on the average wage, whereas houses close to Sydney are generally very expensive.
Sydney has all the great shows and bands. Adelaide sometimes misses out.
Sydney is difficult to drive around and is very expensive for parking. In Adelaide you can drive easily into the central city area and park without to much effort or expense.
Both have great scenery and lots of interesting places to visit. If you love wineries then Adelaide's wineries are closer to the CBD.
I always say to people that Adelaide is like a very big country town and people seem to have more time to be kind to each other. So if I had my choice it would be Adelaide every time.
Hope you enjoy your move,
Good luck,

I suggest Adelaide is the best for family to be raised. it has cheaper houses accomodation than sydney. It has exceptional eateries with much better value than Sydney.
