Depends on where you go. If you go to the big cities you'll be competing with everyone else. But if you go to the mines up north, you could make great money.
Here's a few websites.

http://www.workplace.gov.au/workplace/Individual/Migrant/

Hope this helps |

Your pay could range from better than AU$55,000 per year in say Sydney or a major city where there are good numbers of welders about to perhaps $100,000 in the mining areas of Western Australia (iron or oil and gas) or Central Queensland (coal) which is rather less remote. Probably higher in WA. You may have to negotiate pay rates and conditions with some of the companies so get well informed first.
I can't help you much more, pay and conditions will vary from employer to employer. Check the employment pages of major newspapers on-line. The Australian, (national) The West Australian (WA) The Courier-Mail (Brisbane) The Sydney Morning Herald (Sydney), The Age (Melbourne).
Someone mentioned H&S (health and safety). Probably similar to the UK. |

I can't help specifically but........
I'm sure if you were prepared to work in the mining industry, here, you would make extremely good money.
I know a couple of young brothers who are under 20 and unskilled who are on $1500 per week (take home pay after tax).
Being a skilled tradesman, a welder, I can't imagine how much more you'd be paid. It would be very good money.
They are working at a mine in Queensland. |

I am not 100% on your occupation as I am no welder LOL ... but on the Australian shortage skills jobs list that we are hanging out for ... is 'Welder' (first class) $60,000 - $95,000 (now it states the Salary is based on a Salary Survey 2006 rate, so more than likely more dollars in your pocket!)
There is many trade jobs listed, best for you to take a look http://www.workingin-australia.com/info/569#tradespersons |

If you want to make big money and travel - then go to the mines in WA. I've known of tradies getting $1300 per day.
They tend to work one or two weeks on then one or two weeks off. They are flown in and out by the mining companies to anywhere in Australia. Yes its hard work and long hours while your there, but with equal amounts of time off and big $$$ this would be a great way to see Australia. |

I don't know why you are getting ridiculous answers - I can't hep you specifically, but I have lived in Sydney and I would say that generally that the wages are better than the UK and the standard of living is higher - London and Sydney or both great cities, but Sydney is actually a place where you can have a decent standard of living without being a millionaire.
Casual rates are good, if you are going for a short time, but because it is welding I don't know about H&S reqs. But as long as you get the right visa I don't think you will find it hard to get good work. |

I'm not too sure how easy it would be to get a work permit from the Australian government for a tradesman's job |
