The Truth

I'm a Pom looking for somewher to live in Oz?

I am in the process of getting down under but the place is so big I haven't a clue where would suit me
I'm looking for a semi-rural location but within travelling distance to a majar city/town as I am a Pom it can't be too hot (LOL)
I am an electrician so there shouldn't be any shortage of work but still need good advice as to where would be best to settle

Tasmania or Victoria be best for you a bit cooler there than up north BUT still gets very hot in summer & pommy's winge about the heat even after 60 years here(my mum)

The Blue Mountains can be quite cooler than the city. They are not too far from Sydney. You can buy/rent a really large property there. Trains and motorway into Sydney. But, if you are a sparky then there are lots of new housing places being built for the Sydneysiders (who like a weekend house/who move out of the city). There are also lots of houses in the area. Its very beautiful and can be semi-rural if you want it to as well. It can get quite cold in the Winter (July remember) as well, so you might need a fire then to keep warm.

From a fellow POM who now lives in Sydney (only been here 8 weeks - from Leeds, UK).

Western Australia we are having a boom in our mining industry you will get a job for sure. They will fly you in and out to Perth and don't worry about the heat mate that's what they invented aircondtioning for and we have the best beaches in the world so you can go for a swim to cool down.Good Luck.

Its bloody hot here everywhere mate, and ur right being a sparky you shouldnt have problems anywhere. Theres plenty of work going on around there ..http://www.fleurieupeninsula.com.au/location.asp its under an hours drive to Adelaide but any town around there is beautiful, close to the sea etc, I suggest Port Elliot, but thet are all nice. Weather wise you should like it, but if you didnt mind the heat and wanted to make BIG BUCKS I suggest a mining town called Roxby Downs, its right out in the bush but there is big dollars to be made, First Aid Certificate would be advisable, but really anywhere in Australia ther are lots of places within an hours drive from any major capital. Adelaide is also the cheapest capital to live in, might not be the most exciting capital but by ur question your not wanting that anyway. If you want hussle and bussle go to Sydney or Melbourne. At the moment though in South Australia and also in Kalgoorlie over in Perth the mining boom is on and thats where the money is but both those places are hot, and by money I mean three times as much as you would make in the city, if not more. I know guys that have gone to Roxby Downs for only two years and made enough money to pay their homes off. Cheers.

When you decide, remember the further Nth you go the hotter. However at the moment it's pretty hot and going to get hotter.Your best bet would be a satelite city in Victoria.Perhaps it would be better to come here say around May(last month of autumn)We still have hot weather then but the nights are cool.Plus you'd get aclamatised better to the weather. For the summer ahead.Sparkies make good money here.400 quid a week(35hrs)easy.Geelong in victoria has 3 big companies ford, shell and alcoa. best of luck

Tasmania, while being the coolest place in australia to settle, may be a little TOO rural for your likes, May i suggest Somewhere around Ballarat? It is about an hour and a half from Melbourne, and it is a small city in itself with HEAPS of rural towns around it. Plus, it is a very beautiful place, and An able bodied Sparky will always find work in the area.

As a matter of fact, Ballarat is one of the oldest settlements around the area, As it used to be the site of much gold discovery.

I can answer any other questions you may have as i live not too far from the area myself.

Anywhere in Tasmania would suit you, climate is like the Yorkshire Dales in July.
Like the UK, you can drive from one side to the other in a day.
Back in the 1800s it was a popular place for England to send wayward Poms. So its very "English", with many towns and streets named after UK places.
Good Luck

Im from the west but i would say she'll be too hot for you over here. I would recommend melbourne lots of towns out of melbourne to live in nice and cool, and still central to everywhere i seen the other day flights for $89 to the whitsundays so you can see a bit of oz while ya here. As a sparky you will find work no drama. try www.seek.com.au :)

I second the Blue Mountains. Cooler climate, stunning scenery, easy access to Sydney yet semi-rural, and plenty of work for a sparky due to increased development on the outskirts of Sydney.

Define "hot". What temperature is hot to you????

The further SOUTH you go, the hotter it gets (reply #2 was wrong).

Here in Melbourne this week it was 41 degrees. That's hot in anyone's book. However, it also gets cold here in winter (15 deg days).

If you'd like a nice, warm, constant temperature year-round then look up north around the Sunshine coast. That's close to Brisbane and you can get semi-rural properties near the coast (no tourists).

Do a google search on temperatures and it will give you the average temperatures per city over the year.
