I'm an Australian but...?

I can't stand the place. The accents annoy me, the people annoy me, the bugs and spiders annoy me.

I've lived there half my life (the other half in NZ) and I'm not even a NZ citizen but I prefer this country.

A lot of people that live there seem really sleazy and I never feel safe there.

Shouldn't I feel more patriotic towards where I was born?
Additional Details
Haha Charli you make me laugh, I knew I'd get at least one of those answers. I do live in New Zealand.

Thanks to the other 3 nice answers

I'm Australian as well, although I never go to Oz. I MUCH prefer New Zealand, it's like a gentler version of Au...the accents are less nasally, it's not as harsh (both landscape-wise and culturally). I wouldn't worry at all about whether or not you "have" to feel anything...I'm also an American citizen and, needless to say, feel almost 0 patriotism, since I don't like what our country is. Allegiances are meaningless if they depend simply on where you're born and not where you feel is "right".

Well, the fact that sometimes people prefer somewhere else accounts for a lot of moving around this world!

Migration isn't always about people having to leave their native country, some people simply like it better elsewhere!

But give your Aussie compatriots a fair go, we're not ALL sleazy and and dangerous. Well, OK, I am but I'm sure there are a few that aren't ;-P

Australia does have many places of great natural beauty and sights worth seeing. You might like to travel about a bit one day, and seeing some of them may awake a hidden love of the beauties of this land.

However, you're not alone in preferring NZ, plenty of Aussies love the place ~ and if it wasn't for NZ, who could the Aussies play sport against with any real feelings :-)

Cheers :-)

Its funny because I have a NZ friend who is the same as you but in reverse she has been here half of her life and she loves it and never wants to leave.
So home really is where the heart is and if you are happiest there then thats what it is.

There is no law saying you have to love the country of your birth.
I hope you can find happiness and contentment in your adopted homeland.

You must have spent a lot of time travelling around Australia to be able to say that everything and everyone here annoys you.
It is good to hear that New Zealand has no sleazy people, I didn't know that before now.

Each to his own...

But have you seen what happen to the sheep over there? *shudder*

Choice Cuz!

I am an Aussie and get where your at but sometimes we find our comfort and happiness in other places don't be too concerned about the loss of patriotic feelings sometimes absence of your homeland can strengthen that but then you might just fall in love with the place that comforts you, so go for it and be happy OK.

H-man
As someone else has said "Home is where the heart is".
I have found that the further south you live over here the more friendly they are.

Patriotism is an emotion. Politicians all over the world have exploited this emotion for their own end. So, it is not at all necessary or binding to feel patriotism towards the country of birth.

However, like other umbilical emotions viz. family, city/region of birth, race, language, caste (as in India), religion, patriotism towards the nation of birth, is a very strong emotion and people get carried away by it so much, that some may even get killed or kill others for its pride/honour.

The sad thing is that people forget the basic umbilical emotion of humanity. We are first known by our passports and not by our human DNA. This world is divided first by continents then by countries, then by race, colour, religion, language etc. While this division should facilitate better governance, sadly this works more for discrimination.

I am not surprised by your feelings which may have come from the treatment that you got from the people of Oz and NZ. Mine is a similar case and I can understand your sentiments. And, I am sure there are people out there in Aust and NZ who have reverse sentiments than that of yours.

So, don't be perturbed. Be happy where you are and do good for that country, whether it is Australia or New Zealand because when you do good for the people of your region where you live, you do it good for the humanity first.

Hi Wabby. Sorry we annoy you. What can we do about our accent ... being reasonable for a moment? Bugs and spiders are a pivotal part of any ecology. I thought you were in to that stuff? Yes there are sleazy people in Oz ... and elsewhere. Patriotic? I'd like to put patriotism in a cyber jail and fire it off to some far off supernova. Do you how many people have died needlessly because of patriotism? How many useless and destructive episodes of xenophobia have been fuelled by patriotism? How many dignified races of people have been humiliated and destroyed because of patriotism? You're a great person Wabby, don't clutter your life with heinous concepts like patriotism. Now ... I'll just duck out to the dunny and park the tiger against a roo's leg.

Ummmm, where are these places you are talking about? I'm looking at my Globe and do not see them... oh wait, it (my globe)just fell off my desk and landed up side down (as much as a globe can land upside down) and now I see them... haha!
ok, now send me a ticket to travel and I will investigate all this and report back too you. (especially after I check out Dune's garage, and those Awesome Australian Oranges, yummmy)

i take it you hate the sound of your own voice then?,personally I'm engaged to a kiwi and all her siblings have moved out here to oz in the last year because they see Aussie as a place with more opportunities,i love n.z but for us we choose to live in Australia because wages are better, superannuation craps all over what N.Z can offer, medical is still cheaper and more accessible here, and heads per capita n.z has alot more violence than Aussie,so to sum up we are probably better off without people like you and your attitude towards Australia living here and there are plenty of people from other countries who will come here and care about Australia,so enjoy n.z it obviously works better for you.

you annoy me... you already sound like a real kiwi!

now that you are there, can we convince you to ask all those other free loading kiwi's to move back? or should we treat kiwi land like the poor backward cousins they really are?

there's a reason for all the sheep in kiwiland, they are the only intelligent life there!

NB. I'm one of those native people you have to mention (i wouldn't speak about sh** you know nothing about) which has nothing to do with it, if your new adopted home has such a fantastic welfare system, why are so many bludging on the aussie welfare system, not to mention coming here in droves. I'm pretty sure how you phrased that indicates you are neither aboriginal australian or maori, so i wouldn't go buying into that argument if your ancestors were european, thats more than a little rich don't you think. i know a lot of maori's who aren't satisfied with their govt's policy towards them, so you really don't know what you are talking about.

its generally accepted that there are probably more kiwi's living large in oz cause there aren't the same opportunities in nz. if nz was so wonderful we'd only have vacationing kiwi's here now wouldn't we?

have you seen blacksheep? a perfect example of kiwi's taking the p*** out of themselves, maybe if you had a sense of humour you'd appreciate at.

it might come as a shock to you petal, but we really aren't going to miss you. so what happens when you get tired of nz, moving to uk or usa, i'm sure you'd fit in either place.

Dune
Go! the Kiwi side of you Wabby.

and i dont like the new zealand accent but i dont hold it against new zealanders and i still want to visit there some day. its not really a big deal, if you prefer new zealand stay there, its not like you have to travel very far to get back to australia fi you change your mind.

Um. Well you can if you want. Try going to the gold coast. It's really nice, and then you will feel like an aussie! It's about the only place in oz i like. As mentioned before, i didn't feel safe in brisbane at all this morning.

Im glad i chose to live in nz, and i will proboly never move back to oz.

Just kick up your heels, australia and new zealand are similar, there is no need to feel bad about not loving australia

*Charli* Mamma Di Gemini's
Well if Australia and it's people annoy you little Miss i love New Zealand go back to NZ!!!
