Its a tough one with two children as new zealand is best enjoyed by getting the walking boots on but there are plenty of other things to do.
In Auckland take a boat trip around the famous Waitemata Harbor, visit Kelly Tarlton's Antarctic Encounter and Underwater World or Auckland Zoo. And the Sky tower is a must. For a day out at a theme park suitable for the children try Rainbows end.
But don't stay in the city for too long. Take a trip to Rotorua and visit the Waiotapu thermal wonderlands with its geysers and plopping mud pools. On the way to Rotorua, if you like lord of the rings, go to Matamata and visit Hobbiton!! If you head to Rotorua go via the Coromandel penisula, which is beautiful and dig in the sands of the hot water beach. Or head to Waitomo caves for a boat trip into the pitch black glow worm filled caves.
You will see most of those trips advertised as day trips from Auckland, but I suggest you hire a car, spend a few days in Auckland, then take 4 days to do Coromandel >Rotorua >Waitomo >Auckland. You will have a brilliant time whatever you do - Enjoy |

As always it depends on your interest. You said North Island only. If you like natural beauty, you must go to Bay of Islands. It is hands down the most beautiful water I have seen in the world.
I would suggest just a couple days in Auckland with a trip out to the out islands.
In your second week, drive down to Napier and spend the second week in that general area. Make sure you have lunch at 2-3 of the excellent wineries.
If you are young enough, do the bunji jumping which originated there.
Don't try to drive too much in just two week.. Take it all in and savor every minute. You have arrived in paradise. |

In Auckland start with sky tower, then walk down near to the Waitemata harbour bridge for wicked views.Mission bay/beach is really nice too.If a super 14 rugby game is on try to see 1 at eden park.Day trip to Waiheke island would be really nice(ferry ride).Lots to do so see what takes your fancy once you been there for a day. For rest of north isl Bay of Islands is really nice, also i highly recommend Rotorua and from there a day trip to Waitomo caves will blow you away.Anything else and you need more time! |

Wow, that's a hard one at those ages. They would enjoy the sky tower as long as no one has a serious fear of heights. You could go see the "smelly" pools and take a dip in Rotorua. I think that is where the geysers are too. There is a great Maori village/ show there that should keep the kids' attention. Waitomo Caves are beautiful but not really anything there that kids 6 & under could do. Much of tourism is adventure based, not really child friendly, especially on the North Island.
On the South Island, you could do dolphin or whale watching in Kaikoura and also go see the seals at Seal Beach. You & the wife could even swim with the dolphins if you get the right company that is willing to wrangle the little ones for ten minutes. You can fly a small plane there too but don't recall if there was a back seat to take the little ones. Kaikoura also offers horseback tours if the kids are not afraid of horses. There are the giant boulders for some great climbing on the beach outside of Oamaru. Good penguin watching in Dunedin. If they travel well and can walk half a mile without complaining, I would HIGHLY recommend the Southern Scenic drive, get maps in Dunedin. In Christchurch, there is the Antarctic Center & the Aquarium in the Square and Gondola rides through town. |

You must find the hideen valley it is beautiful it is between taupo and rotorua. You have to see the craters of the moon. Go to Mount Manganui it is lovely there and there is a great salt water spa - go to the polunesian spa & the luge in rotorua too. Then go up to hot water beach dig a hole in the sand and let it fill up with hot water and sit in it. Go to see the glo worms you can go in a boat so that will be fine. Go swimming with the dolphins near cape reigna. New Zealand it beautiful and you will have a fantastic time |
