Don't bother moving to any of the capital cities. They are overcrowded and extremely polluted and it takes ages to get everywhere. I suggest a smaller city like toowoomba in queensland. It has everything brisbane has, but not in the quantities. It has a population of about 100000 people, and is a great place to live. It is also very safe and takes about 15 minutes to get anywhere in town. |

FIRST tip.
Make enquiry to http://www.immi.gov.au
This is the Department of Immigration. It will tell you what you need to do to come here.
It is not a case of - pack up, get on a plane, arrive in Australia and start looking for a house and a job. Immigration at the border will want to know that you will be able support yourself (and family) the moment you arrive here - not... "when I find a job"
Do the right thing. Do some research. DO NOT try to sneak in. The penalties are severe.
All the best. |

its not easy to immigrate here, you must meet the requirements, medical, criminal, work qualifications to name a few
Australia isn't looking for immigrants unless you have a skill that is short in our workforce
try the immigration website to learn more |

As per the last poster, if you have any sort of a trade, then definitely move to one of the country towns, regardless of the state. We really need tradies |

Call their Embassy or go to their embassy website, for starters. You'll also need a passport for ID, obtain the forms at your local post office. You'll need a passport photo, any local photography shop will do this for you. then add that with the application. Then wait on the passport from the US State dept, could be 6-9 months. The visa is what the Austrailian embassy will issue on the US passport (obviously after you have the passport). They might get real weird when it comes to issuing a "work" visa like Canada does (don't let foreigner take our jobs, sort of stuff).
The visa will only allow you to work there. Legal immigrant status is entirely upto the Embassy.
Hopefully this gives you a small hint of how to get started, good luck.
They might ask a question such as "If you live here, what would you do to support yourself?" Better have the right answer to that one. |
