Australia day is the national day of Australia. It is a national public holiday on January 26 every year. It's the day Australians do a lot flag waving and celebrating everything that is unique about their country. . Australians will often celebrate by having a barbecue for their families and friends. The Australian of the year and other recognition's of merit and service to the country are also awarded around this time by the Prime Minister.
Australia day is not without controversy though. January 26 happens to be the day the first British fleet of colonists arrived in Sydney harbour. Because of this, the Aboriginal community calls it Invasion day. They feel particularly insulted that as Australian citizens they are supposed to celebrate on a day forever etched in their collective history as the start of the systematic destruction of their culture and community. So in addition to the national celebrations going on you will also find around the nation Aboriginal groups holding a day of public mourning for this loss. |

It is close to the USA's 4th of July, flags, bbq, beach, backyard cricket, game of footy (football) in the park etc. It is a public holiday so some people have a 3 day weekend away camping or the like. Lots of cold beer is consumed. Most cities have fireworks, Sydney has a harbour full to the brim with boats. Some of us just relax and enjoy a day off work. |

Australia Day, also known as Anniversary Day, is the official national day of Australia. We celebrate on the 26th of January every year, and family's usually gather together and have a BBQ and watch the cricket, or go to the beach. |

The best day in the whole world!
Tis tomorrow (26th of Jan) and it is a public holiday. Most towns in Australia have special celebrations, some places do big breakfast or lunches. Many people choose to become Australian citizens and are 'sworn in' on Australia Day. We also give out awards to people who make our country brilliant.
As for the so called "invasion day", well, the only place I've read about that is on Wikipedia. Everyone should want to celebrate how awesome our country is! |

It is the 26th of January and it is a remembrance/celebration of the First Fleet landing at Sydney Cove. It is a public holiday and celebrations are held in each city. Many families go to the beach or parks for a BBQ and a game of cricket.
Australia Day awards are presented and also on this day Citizenship Ceremonies are held for the newer Australians in our communities.
It is probably the closest thing we have to USA's July 4th. |

It is the national day of Australia and is celebrated in Jan 26th.
Unfortunately in recent years it has been marred by racist violence, and the intimidation people who do not look 'Australian' in some parts of Sydney. (The largest city in Australia.) You can find a report of the latest such incident - regarding the Australia Day just passed - here:
