Yes, it is smart. Shows future employers you have a certain level of independence, and you're not afraid to make such decisions. Plus it must be a great experience. Good luck. |

Why not? Aus is a terrific place to live and travel around. Just be sure to have a bath before you arrive. We're in drought, you know! :-)
If you are looking for a fun & vibrant city, try Adelaide. It's far cheaper than Sydney or Melbourne, yet is still a big enough city (1 million+ residents) to have a blast in. Enjoy!
Reassure your parents by telling them you promise not to travel around the outback in a Kombi van, you won't talk to strangers (much) and you will wear thongs (not flip flops as you Brits call them!) in the shower so you don't catch anything whilst staying at the cheap youth hostels. Worth a try. |

Great experience, with the benefit of youth visa opportunities. Be adventurous in where you go, don't just stick to the Eastern seaboard cities. Lots of employment opportunities in many areas and the casual rates often pay more than they pay check-out staff in the UK.
Sensible precautions apply, but really nothing more than you would use in the UK. |

Convince your parents? You're 22 years old, kiss them on the cheek, thank them for their concern and wave goodbye as you go and do as you like anyway.
Look, I can understand their concern, my mum has the same problem but she has never tried to stop me, that's not fair and I'm a big girl now.
Australia is a great place, you'll have an absolute blast. If you're that worried about it, try one of those places that will help set you up with a job and temporary accommodation before you get here. Don't come here expecting that just because we look smaller that it's safer than anywhere else. Like any place there are those certain things that girls should do to avoid risk. You know what I'm talking about.
Also, learn as much as possible about our culture, mostly common sense things for us like always swim between the flags at the beach, or don't go swimming in a billabong at night (Lonely Planet is good for common sense). Anytime I've heard of a tourist being killed it's because they didn't exercise common sense, so research research research. And if your parents are still worried, try and find a travel buddy, set up a lot of means of communication between you and them, that kind of thing. Good luck! |

Your parents are right to worry. You'll be hit on constantly.
That said, if you can find a way, do it! It's a wonderful place to be when you're young. |
