If you are a visitor you can drive on your UK license. I did when I went out there for a holiday. I think you are limited on the length of time you can though, you have to apply for an Autralian licence after either 6 months or a year. Can't remember which, but you will have to take a theory test first. |

Believe it or not, some states will accept a full UK licence, others require a international licence! Crazy or what - just get an international D/L and you can't go wrong. |

You don't need an International Driving Permit when you have a full UK licence, but if you decide to get one anyway, you must always carry your UK licence as well. The International licence never replaces the actual UK licence - it's only an adjunct to it. They're used when the licence from your country is in a different language than that of the country you're visiting. As a tourist, you can drive for up to 12 months in some states and indefinitely in others. See links below.
If you're moving here on a permanent visa, you can only drive on the UK licence for 3 months in all states.

you can use a uk licence. and as for all that for a certain amount of time crap people keep talking about. do you really think the police are going to bother chasing you up when they know your leaving the country. seriously, dont even threat over it. the chances of getting pulled up are slim! i spent 9 months on the road and never even got pulled over! if you get caught, play dumb. they cant put points on your lincence anyway! |

Permanent Resident
A Permanent Resident is normally allowed to drive for 3 months before needing an Australian Licence, after that period they would be classed as driving without a valid licence.

Visitors
A person on a Visitors Visa does not have to abide by the above rules, and would be allowed to drive a private vehicle on a valid CURRENT driving licence from their own country, for as long as they have a valid visitors visa.
Visiting motorists are required to carry their licence (and English translation/IDP if applicable) at all times while driving and produce it to Police on request.
Production of their temporary visas may also be required as evidence of their temporary residential status.

International Driving Permits
British Licence holders can ignore any references to "International Driving Permits (IDP)", as these are not required for driving licences in the English language holders.
They are required when your normal licence is in a different language, and must accompany your VALID National licence.
An IDP is NOT a licence in itself, but effectively just a Translation of your licence.
