I have a friend in Mildura who says start anywhere. If you love cities there are jewels here. There is desert, mountain range, rolling hills,prairies... Ayers rock supreme. The aborigine people, inspiring, would be a trespass to miss learning about the caretakers of this island continent. I only wish I was going! ENJOY :) |

Word of advice, avoid Fraser Island, it's a waste of your time and a complete bore. Brisbane is ok for a day or two, but American cities are generally far more entertaining and thrilling. Surfer's Paradise/Gold Coast is the place to go if you're looking for fun, socializing and glitz. The rest of Queensland is pretty sedate, quiet and boring. As a matter of fact, I would only recommend you visit Australia if you're looking to get away from it all and relax. If you're looking to have fun, eat good food and all that, you won't find it. The people are nice, no hard feelings, but the only things there worth visiting and experiencing are the Outback and the wildlife. Take a bus trip from Brisbane to a town like Roma or beyond that on McCarty bus lines, it's incredible scenic and awe-inspiring. Visit a ranch and check out the wildlife on a tour. Visit Steve Irwin's zoo, or visit the one in Brisbane. I haven't been up to Cairns, but I hear it's nice. Pack your favorite snacks, enough of them to get you through the trip, Aussie stuff is garbage, trust me. Have fun. |

you know, if you have time, drive from cooloongatta to surfers, to brisbane, to sunshine coast to fraser coast via fraser island to mackay to north queensland coast, whitsundays, then cape york then back via inland link emrald, lonreach, mt isa etc. back to brisbane. this would be about 4 weeks slow drive

You have to see Airlie beach its beautiful or even Horseshoe bay in Bowen (50mins north of Airlie). A great place not many know about is the Bowen River Hotel. Its run by a wacky couple and is a famous hotel up that way because of a murder that happened there years and years ago.Lots of history and awesome company.(west of collinsville) You can also camp on Gloshter Island for free but there are heaps of snakes (near dingo beach). One of the best places I have ever been to was Lightning Ridge (south west qld) fanous for opals. There are slivers of opals all over the ground, billy cart races, a house made from glass bottles, underground houses and pubs and a cool museum in the middle of nowhere full of strange stuff. Well worth the drive.(but watch out for kangaroos) I live on Gold coast and plenty to do at surfers paradise. Mt Tamborine is beautiful and lots of vineyards but must see natural bridge near Canungra - amazing |

Well, that depends a lot on how much time you have and what you are interested in! Here are a couple of ideas - all tried and tested by ME!
* Fraser Island - 4WDing on the beach, beautiful white sand and blue water, ship wrecks, sand dunes, Eli creek with its fast current, OH SO MUCH TO DO!
* Gold Coast and the theme parks
* Whitsunday Islands & Great Barrier Reef- Stay away from Hamilton Island (too crowded. My personal favourite was Brampton Island. Dunk Island was also good. Arlie Beach is on the coast and that is gorgeous too.
*Mount Isa - a mining town which is in the middle of nowhere but is interesting if you want to go touring down into a working mine. You can go 3kms underground!
* Port Douglas and the Daintree Rainforest - Take a 4WD trip around there. It's gorgeous!
I hope this has helped a little. There are so many wonderful places to explore. Have a great time! |
