Melbourne would be better, not so full on when you 1st arrive and is nicer to spend time in to get your bearings.Plenty of work going there and if need be Sydney and Adelaide are only a days coach journey away from Melbourne! You lucky git! |

I would choose the shortest flight which I think might bd go Melbourne and then travel to Sydney. If you can go to Cairns I preferred it to Sydney. |

cairns is wet from november - may - so although cheap acc at that time - no tourists - no work!!
sydney - big city - so lots of varied jobs - i love the coast between sydney and brisbane - byron bay - fun and lively - lovely beach - woy woy the beach area 2 hours from sydney but easy to get there by train from sydney - so i would say sydney as a good choice and ease to get to other places.
Bear in mind if sydney is not for you when you get ther melbourne is 8 hours drive awy!
have fun - we did 6 weeks last nov and loved every minute! |

Either would be good Personally I live in slower rat race of Melbourne as opposed to the faster rat race of Sydney
Both Cities have plenty of work & backpacking facilities. |

I'd go to Melbourne. and then travel up to Sydney. and then on to Byron bay, surfers, Fraser island etc.
you'll find work anywhere if you want it!! city's in more "normal" jobs, bar work etc, country its fruit picking.
its the right route if you wanna do the east coast. we did it, came back 4 weeks ago. loved it!!
enjoy your travels, you'll have a ball!! |

perhaps I am biased because I live here but for young backpackers in summer I think Sydney is the best ,then it's an 8 hr drive to Melbourne or 12hrs to Surfers Paradise Queensland. |

Sydney is the main international airport in Australia with all airlines arriving there.
Flying to Sydney gives you more options for airlines and make the prices cheaper.
I recommend Emirates or Air New Zealand.
Just a tip, alot of international flights arriving in Melbourne will actually be via Sydney first.
If you start at Sydney you can easily fly to Melbourne for less then $100 with Virgin Blue or north to the Gold Coast for the same. Qantas often have discounted fares too. |

Sydney is nearer to NZ. Don't have any mud on your boots, or you won't get in. |
