I live on the Gold Coast, and would recommend that you get away from the tourist traps - such as Surfers Paradise - although depending on where you are from you may want to do a day trip here to check it out. I guess it totally depends on where you are from and what you are looking for. For example I know that a group of 18 - 20 something year olds would be likely to love the nightlife in surfers and broadbeach and the abundance of clubs, but obviously if you are a couple and not wanting to go out then this wouldnt suit you. If you are still looking for a few bars, some good restaurants and a bit fo nightlife Broadbeach would be good - classier than surfers but not too far away and still with a bit of action. If you are after something quieter you could always go to the hinterland, a winery (i think there is only one here but apparently its quite nice) climb mount warning, drive down to byron bay for the day. The southern end of the gold coast is a lot less touristy and it is much nicer, but as i said , i guess it depends who you are travelling with and what you are looking for. Let me know and I can let you know more.

nothing much really, shopping for souvenirs and the cafes.

Brisbane is 1/2h drive and a contrast to the Gold coast with a lot of history and heritage buildings.
it you do go to Brisbane don't miss the botanical gardens especially the Mt Cootha tropical one.

A little bit further up is Sunshine Coast - very beautiful. Worth the drive. You'll pass by the Australia Zoo too - the late Steve Irwin's zoo. Then you get to Noosa which has amazing beaches. Enjoy .

For a sub-tropical rainforest experience, try the Gold coast hinterland, on the border of NSW - Lamington National Park, O'Reilly's Guesthouse, Best of All Lookout, Springbrook, Natural Arch - all these are fantastic aspects of the back of the Gold Coast, yet usually the first to be overlooked.

Nothing, the gold coast is nothing but a hole bunch of new stuff crammed into something called a city, it has no history or culture

i would say go to Brisbane

You can go to the casino .There are malls where you can do some shopping.I think that's about it.
