plenty - you'd be considered in the upper class-ish range. 40-60k is normal. If you're starting a family, make sure you choose a location carefully, not right in the city. Traffic is terrible anyway, so a half-hourish commute daily is definitely worth it to get a nice place in a family growth area.

Good luck - its a great place

Sydney is an awsome city to live in depending on where u r planning 2 live. 85k is heaps. U will b doing very well 4 urself and ur family. No stress financially there at all. Good luck with the move. I wish I was making that kinda money. I live in Sydney and love it.

Yeah.
85k is good. Just beware of interest rates and such.

Freinds of mine in Auistralia with whom I have checked say this is sufficient if you are not intending to buy a property at the outset.
However, you do not say what CURENCY you are being paid in. £85 is about twice $85 Amercian dollars and three times Australian dollars.
Make sure you check the offer again.

Ask to speak to other employees
Call a trade union locally, or enquire on the internet.

BUDGET
make a list of all the outgoings:
Home rent
POwer
Transport
Health care / insurance
Food
Entertainment
School costs
Vacations
Savings

It might be a good idea to go alone for the first six months, or alternatively, take the whole family for three months, and see how it goes. Make sure you have a OPEN return tickets you can use for holidays to to return.
The cost of living is not the only thing to consider. You could try hooking up with a US or Engish settler's group ( or your own language, faith or interest group) to ask them questions about health-care, housing and schooling.

Good luck.
HEY remember the cost of the honeymoon and wedding!

sydney is a lovely place. The cost of houses are quite expensive and they're not exactly the nicest. check out this website www.realestate.com.au to have a browse at sydney houses. $85k should deffinitly be enough for you to live on with a family. Good luck!

More than enough!!!

Bloody more than enough. Well above the national average wage. However, Sydney is the most expensive city to live in Australia.

You can buy a one bedroom unit 10 minutes from the heart of Sydney, near the uni and Hospital for around $450 000 - $600 000., so a good deposit would come in handy. Most people that work in Sydney commute by train, some travel as far as 70 km each way. Usually the further you get the cheaper the housing. $85 000 is a good salary but you would not be considered upper class. If you were to rent near the city, you'd pay some where from $380 - $450. per week for a nice one bedroom apartment, with a parking space. Parking is at a premium so make sure you plan ahead. Many people that live in the city don't own a car. Public transportation to the City is very good..not always on time but what can you do? Just plan to leave a little earlier. Petrol is about $1.40 a litre and going up to $1.50 they say. A loaf of bread can cost between $2.50 and $4.00 if you like special types eg. rye, multigrains, Soy and Linseed ect. Steak is around $25 kg. Mince is around $12 kg. Appliances and Cars are more expensive in Australia than in the USA. I hope this has helped.

That's really good money. You'll do fine in Sydney with a salary that size.
